By earnest prayer and careful study of the book of Daniel, a sincere, God-fearing New England farmer, William Miller, was guided by God to crack the code of Daniel 8 and 9, and discover that a major event was predicted to occur near the half-way mark of the nineteenth century.

This date (later corrected to the autumn of 1844) was, indeed, the right one: Something very important was to occur on October 22, 1844 (Great Controversy, 456-457).

And it did.

A major new work began within the Sanctuary in heaven, a work of investigative judgmentwhich you are acquainted with (Great Controversy, 409-432, 479-491). That event was one of the most important in all human history.

But another event also occurred on October 22, 1844, an event we rarely take notice of. It is unfortunate that we give it so little attention.

It is an event predicted in the book of Revelation:

And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven. And sware by Him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer.Revelation 10:5-6.

We have here, in Revelation 10:6, a second prediction which began to take effect on October 22, 1844.

What is that prediction, and how can we be certain that it is so?

The phrase, that there should be time no longer could have several interpretations, and, of ourselves, we would not be able to know which of them to apply. Only Scripture can give us correct interpretations. Fortunately, we are told exactly what it means in a Spirit of Prophecy comment on Revelation 10. It is printed in 7 Bible Commentary 971, where we are told that  it was Christ Himself who spoke the words given in that chapter. He is the angel of Revelation 10.

Here is the explanation of Revelation 10:6:

This time, which the angel declares with a solemn oath, is not the end of this worlds history, neither of probationary time, but of prophetic time, which should precede the advent of our Lord. That is, the people will not have another message upon definite time. After this period of time, reaching from 1842 to 1844, there can be no definite tracing of the prophetic time. The longest reckoning reaches to the autumn of 1844.7 Bible Commentary, 971 [emphasis ours].

The Bible says, I am the Lord ; I change not. (Malachi 3:6). When the Lord says something, it is so, and no man can change it.

And, we might add, no man should try to change it.

In accordance with this light, Ellen White repeatedly wrote that there would be no correct time prophecies, no accurate time settings, no worthwhile time calculations, and no usable time-span calculations after 1844. None would be given to mankind by the Lord, and none would correctly be deduced by  anyone on earth.

One thing you can be certain of: When the Lord says something, Satan will try to counterwork it. He will  cause men to ignore it, reject it, ridicule it, or explain it away. That is the way Satan works, and we need to be aware of it. Surely, we do not want to be found on Satan's side of the controversy, defending and promoting his arguments and devices.

In the Garden of Eden, God said not to eat of a certain tree. So Satan tempted Eve to specially eat of that one. To all mankind, God said to keep the seventh day holy, so Satan invented substitute holy days on the first and sixth days of the week. An immense portion of mankind today keeps one or the other of those false sabbaths holy.

First, we need to know what God says. Second, we should obey it. Third, we should be aware of the fact that Satan will try to get us to do something different, and thus disobey the commandment of the Lord.

When God says to do something, we should do it. When He says not to do something, we should not do it! This may sound simplistic, but it is a life or death issue.

If you are tempted to set time, or believe the theories of those who are doing so, read this:

We are not to live upon TIME EXCITEMENT. We are not to be engrossed with speculations in regard to the times and the seasons which God has not revealed. 1 Selected Messages, 189.

I saw that some were getting a false EXCITEMENT, arising from preaching time; but the Third Angels Message is stronger than time can be. Early Writings, 75.

The people were weary with the traveling, and they had finally come to the banks of the Jordan. Moses sent twelve spies across the river to spy out the land. They returned with grapes, and a false report.

God had said it was time to enter the Promised Land. The spies said it was not time. The people believed the spies. So the Lord said they would perish in the wilderness because of it. He had set the time for them to enter the goodly land, and they refused to accept it.

Then, the next day, they decided to obey the Lord by setting a different time for the fulfillment of His Word, a different time to enter the Promised Land. But the Lord had told them there would be no more time for that, until 40 years had passed. He had given them a time prophecy, and they determined to break it. You know the result (Numbers 13-14).

The people tried to set a time during a period of time when the Lord said not to. They perished in the wilderness as a result.

God has told us, Do not set time after 1844. The words are clear, and repeated many times in the Spirit of Prophecy.

Jesus has told His disciples to watch, but not for definite time. Evangelism, 221.

Now, someone will say, Oh, but we are not setting prophetic time, but only literal time. Seriously, now, that is a lame excuse! The Lord, through Ellen White, did not tell us, Do not set prophetic time, but you can set literal time. No, we were repeatedly told, in the Spirit of Prophecy writings, DO NOT SET TIME!

Prophetic time is predicted time; as simple as that. It is not a special kind of predicted time, it is all predicted time. To say it differently, prophetic time is prophesied time. When we say that Scripture predicts a certain time span, year, or actual date, this is a prophetic time statement. It is prophetic time, or prophesied (predicted), time that we are dealing with.

Prophetic time includes all time setting, whether it be about events which have not yet occurred, or which have already occurred.

We were told not to set definite time after 1844 (Great Controversy, 456-457). What is definite time? It is an actual date; year, month, or day. What does the phrase definite time mean to you? How can it be interpreted to mean prophetic time, and not also literal time?

The Spirit of Prophecy never differentiates between literal and prophetic time setting, and definitely not in the sense that modern time setters do. It is all time setting.

They claim that it is all right for them to set time, since they only do it with day-for-day interpretations (1260 days, instead of 1260 years, etc.)

It is true that Bible time prophecies include both day-for-day and year-for-day time sequences. But both are time prophecies; both are prophetic time settings.

Indeed, is not all time setting literal? It is the Jehovah's Witnesses who have non-literal time; they say a day equals a thousand years, and therefore they do not need to keep the Bible Sabbath.

We are told not to set dates (Life Sketches, 89; Early Writings, 22). Then why are we doing it?

We are told that time will never again be a test, and that our message to the people, any people, must not be hung on time (Early Writings, 75). Is not that clear enough?

We are told that the influence of time setting will destroy the faith of Gods people (1 Testimonies, 72-73). Are you or I guilty of trying to destroy the faith of Gods people? (Compare 1 Testimonies, 409.)

We are told that there should be no definite time set after 1844, and that those who do so are teaching heresy. That is strong language (2 Selected Messages, 73).

We are told that setting time leads precious souls into strange paths (2 Selected Messages, 113). You and I dare not do that, or support it by our words or influence.

We are told to beware of anyone who would set a time for the Lord to fulfill His Word in regard to His coming, or in regard to any other promise He has made of special significance (Testimonies to Ministers, 55). How much more all-inclusive can a sentence get? What must the Lord do to us, before we will stop setting time? Must He send us back into the wilderness for another forty years, as He did to the Israelites when they tried to confound His time statement?

We are told that not even the angels know the dates we are trying to search out, and that souls are going down to ruin because of all this uncalled for time setting:

Because the times repeatedly set have passed, the world is in a more decided state of unbelief than before in regard to the near advent of Christ. They look upon the failures of the time setters with disgust; and because men have been so deceived, they turn from the truth substantiated by the Word of God that the end of all things is at hand. 4 Testimonies, 307.

We are told of those who are very earnest in mapping out the future and the dates for coming events(Desire of Ages, 632-633),are doing that which we should not do.

We are told that we are to take up the yoke of preaching Christ, and not take up the yoke of time setting (Testimonies to Ministers, 60-61).

We are told that when we preach definite time, we only hurt the people, and, when the time passes, they fall back into coldness, darkness, and sin, and it is almost impossible to later arouse them again (4 Testimonies, 308).

It is presumption to do that which God specifically said not to do. We are told that those who presumptuously preach definite time, please the devil and only show they are false prophets (4 Testimonies, 307).

A key aspect here is the delay factor. In the very last chapter of the Bible, we are told more than once to expect Christ's return very soon! But the message of these time setters is that we have a few years delay before the end will come.

No one has a true message fixing the time when Christ is to come or not to come. Be assured that God gives no one authority to say that Christ delays His coming five years, ten years or twenty years. Be ye also ready, for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh. (Matthew 24:44).2 Selected Messages, 113-114.

Oh, someone will say, we are not dating the Second Advent, but only some other, some different, unfulfilled prophecy.

Read this:

There will always be false and fanatical movements made by persons in the church who claim to be led of God, those who will run before they are sent, and will give day and date for the occurrence of unfulfilled prophecy. The enemy is pleased to have them do this. 2 Selected Messages, 84.

Oh, but someone will say, but we are only dating a promise yet to be fulfilled before the Second Advent.

The counsel is clear:

Let all our brethren and sisters beware of anyone who would set a time for the Lord to fulfill His Word in regard to His coming, or in regard to any other promise He has made of special significance.Testimonies to Ministers, 55.

But, you will say, the man who presents these time settings surely seems inspired by God. According to 2 Selected Messages, 65, such men are, indeed, inspired, but by Satan.

The problem is that men and women desire to pry open secrets, not revealed by God in His Word. But it is wrong to try to do that. Read 7 Bible Commentary, 989 (more complete in 1 Selected Messages, 191). Here is part of it:

God has not revealed to us the time when this message will close, or when probation will have an end . . Let us not seek to know that which has been kept secret in the councils of the Almighty. 7 Bible Commentary, 989; 1 Selected Messages, 191.

Probation will end suddenly and unexpectedly, when we least expect it. That is the message of God to mankind (7 Bible Commentary, 989). Yet men and women today are giving us a variety of dates for the close of probation. They presume to be able to date in advance an event, which the God of heaven says no one will be able to do.

It is clear that, repeatedly, Ellen White reiterated the message declared by Christ, the angel of Revelation 10. In verse 6, He declared, with finality, that there would be no more time prophecies after 1844. After that date, never again would an earthly prophet, or any other individual, be shown a time prophecy by the God of heaven, or be able to correctly deduce one. Instead, the Creator will Himself declare, from the heavens, the day and hour of the Second Advent. Because it will be proclaimed from the skies, there can be no doubt that it comes for God. Also keep in mind that it will not be given till some time after the close of human probation.

The voice of God is heard from heaven, declaring the day and hour of Jesus coming, and delivering the everlasting covenant to His people. Like peals of loudest thunder His words roll through the earth. Great Controversy, 640.

That statement cannot be counterfeited, cannot be misjudged, cannot be questioned. It is, doubtless, God Himself who is speaking.

Listen not to the time-setting preachers and their date-setting pamphlets. From October 22, 1844, onward, only God Himself  will date future events, and He will declare it as thunder from the skies.

But there is another aspect to that Revelation 10:5-6 passage which we need to consider. It is important, and it is worthy of our careful attention:

And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven. And sware by Him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer. Revelation 10:5-6.

Consider thoughtfully what you have just read! We have here a most solemn promise, or pledge, by Christ Himself. It is given as a sworn statement, based on the fact that His Father exists! How much more serious and meaningful a statement can be given to us!

What kind of sin is it to turn from that statement and, by our time setting, seek to counterwork and deny it?

Whoever does it, must be a brave person. For to do so is to declare that Christ is wrong, and the Father does not exist!

In view of Revelation 10:5-6, as explained by 7 Bible Commentary, 971 (and all the other supporting Spirit of Prophecy statements), it must be a type of blasphemy to set time, when Christ has said not to do it!

How brave are you? Brave enough to flaunt the authority of God and set time, accept time settings, and encourage others to accept them?

Why were you and I placed here? Why were we brought into the Advent Message? merely to focus our attention on time messages, which God has not given us, or were we placed here to share the great truth about obedience to the law of God through faith in Jesus Christ?

Will God be pleased if you switch your message from that, which He has given you, to one which He solemnly adjured you to have nothing to do with?

Thank it over. Probationary time is short. What kind of answer will you give Him in the judgment? If you have been involved in this, you would do well to repent while you have an opportunity. Put the terrible thing from you, and live a changed life. God will forgive, but do not wait.

People have been setting time for a long time. Did you know that, just before the end of the first millennium, there was a time-setting group that predicted that Christ would return about the year A.D. 1000? They had applied Revelation 20 to the Second Advent.

But our own people have been especially active in this line. God knew this would happen, and so He forewarned us not to do it. But we have done it anyway.

Here are several time settings which have occurred in our past history:

1851 In 1850, Joseph Bates predicted that the Second Advent would occur in 1851, because he speculated that the seven drops of blood on the mercy seat (Leviticus 16:14) represented seven years (1 E. G. White Biography, 207-210, by A. White).

1854 This time setting was keyed to the fact that it was ten years since 1844. (See 1 Testimonies, 409for an Inspired comment.)

1884 This time setting was based on the fact that it was 40 years since 1844, and likened to the 40 years delay in the wilderness, before entrance into the promised land. (She mentions this time setting in2 Selected Messages, 73.)

1894 A 50-year anniversary was the basis of this time setting. (See 2 Selected Messages, 113 for an Inspired comment.)

1928 Taylor G. Bunch led out in this time excitement. He predicted that, since it was 40 years since 1888, Christ's Second Advent was about to occur.

1938 This time setting did not attract as much attention, and was based on a 50-year anniversary since 1888.

1955 This prediction was made by the Davidians, and was not for October 22, but April 22 of that year. Adventist leaders were to be slain by the angels just prior to that date, and several other events would occur. Details are given in our book, The Davidians of Waco (page 15). When nothing happened, the Davidian movement collapsed for several years.

1964 Many were interested in this one. I recall when it happened, and told my friends nothing would come of it. This was the 120th year since 1844 (As it was in the days of Noahand he preached 120 years).

1967 William Grotheer says that the probation of the Seventh-day Adventist denomination ended this year, because the Jews won the Six Day War against the Arabs. After that date, it is no longer necessary to evangelize.

1987 This was a supposed jubilee cycle terminal date for the end of time.

1994 This was another supposed jubilee cycle date for the end. Several different folk have focused their attention on 1994 as the key year when final events will begin. One of these is Larry Wilson. He believes four major lines of evidence converge on March 19, 1994 as the key closing-events date. Yet, even after the date passed uneventfully, he continues to claim it is very important. Some time setters are doing that now: claiming that something must have happened on the predicted date, when actually nothing happened!

And that brings us to a special time setter:

Before concluding, this collection of dates, we should give attention to one of the very boldest time setters in Adventist history: Jeanine Sautron, a woman who lives in France. She dares to set times many years in advance, all the while knowing the Spirit of Prophecy prohibitions against doing so. A rather complete refutation of her theories will be found in our booklet, Jeanine Sautron.

Here, very briefly, are some of her time settings. In spite of the fact that NOT ONE of them has been fulfilled to date, she still claims that all of them are inspired of God, and the events predicted actually occurred! Quoted material is from her publications):

1988 The Judgment of the Living begins with the Seventh-day Adventists. That means that, if true, the individual probation of nearly all of us has already closed.

1991 The official organized Seventh-day Adventist Church was spewed out and rejected by God.

1992 After a year without a people, in this year God is said to have given Sautron's group, which, in her broken English (she is French), she calls the Remnants, the candlestick of religious authority.

1993 The Remnants were commanded to begin evangelizing the world, as of March 6.

1994 One of her most astounding claims: The sealing ended in March 1994! That means all individual probations are closed! Yet the National Sunday Law crisis has not begun yet! Sautrons theology is totally mixed up.

1994 March 23, 1994: The four winds of Revelation 7 were unleashed! Well, when did that happen? We never noticed it. Also predicted to occur soon after that date: The Sunday Law will soon be here!

1995 March 7, 1995: worldwide disasters and economic collapse! I assure you; nothing eventful will occur on that date.

2005 March 7, 2005: Probation closes for man! That would be the universal close of probation. Yet Sautron places the end of the sealing eleven years earlier!

Here are some promised events which God has foretold before the Millennium begins, when we shall be with Christ in heaven:

DEFINITE TIME There will be no tracing of definite time after 1844 (7BC 971) for time setting is not a test after 1844 (EW 75; 2SM 73; 1T 409).

THE INVESTIGATIVE JUDGMENT None know how soon it will pass to the cases of the living(GC 490; 5T 692), for no man knows how near we are to the close of it (GC 490-491). The destiny of all men is decided at its close (COL 310; GC 428, 490), for the door of mercy will be closed when it ends(GC 428), and probation  ends at that time (GC 428, 491). There is no probationary time after it has examined the cases of the living (COL 123), for it will continue until every case has been decided (GC 436). Thus it extends to the close of probation (BC 436), for it is the closing work in the heavenly Sanctuary (GC 428).

THE NATIONAL SUNDAY LAW The enforcement of this Sunday Law will be the sign that the end is near, that the limit of Gods forbearance has been reached, and that the time for Satan's marvelous workings has come (5T 451).

THE LOUD CRY AND THE LATTER RAIN The Loud Cry and Latter Rain are very closely related (EW 271), for the Latter Rain empowers Gods people in the Loud Cry (EW 86; GC 611-612). But it is wrong to predict the date for the Latter Rain (1 SM 188), because we should not time set the outpouring of the Holy Spirit (EV 221). No light has been given us regarding a definite time for this event (7BC 984).

THE THIRD ANGELS MESSAGE We are warned against time setting in our sharing of the truth(EW 72). This message does not need time setting in order to strengthen it (EW 75). It must never be hung on time (1SM 188). God has never revealed a definite time for the close of the last message (7BC 989-9901SM 191), for, indeed, there are no more messages of any kind that are based on time (6BC 1052; 7BC 971; 1SM 188) and no man has a true message of definite time (2SM 113). This is because no man is able to predict any future time event (EV 221). He cannot know definite time (6BC 1052; EV 221; 1SM 188; 6T 440).

THE CLOSE OF PROBATION God has not revealed definite time for the close of probation (7BC 989-990; 1SM 191), and we have been warned against time setting in regard to this event (7BC 989-990; 2SM 73).

ANY PROMISE GOD HAS GIVEN We should beware of time setting in regard to any promise that God has made (TM 55).  So then, consider this: The people of God have been promised many events that shall take place before the Second Advent. (1) Should we try to figure out when these events will take place? No, we should not try to do this (TM 55). (2) Should we dream up new events that God has never told us of and time set in regard to them? Obviously, we should not do this either.

THE SECOND COMING No man has a true message of time setting in regard to the Second Advent (2SM 113), and to try to do so pleases Satan (DA 457). We have been warned against doing this(DA 632-633; FE 335; GC 456-457; 1T 409; TM 55, 61)  and we should beware of doing it (TM 55, 61; 1SM 75-76). Those who do it only weaken the faith of Gods people (EW 22; 1T 72-73).

I have just been given a copy of Larry Wilsons book, Warning! Revelation is about to be Fulfilled, 1994 edition. Within this book are several charts like the ones condemned by Mrs. White while she was still living. One of these charts places the second coming in 1998, based on the 6,000 year principal. The seven last plagues begin in September 1997, Satan appears in late 1996, and the seven trumpets begin in November 1994. Within this book are prophetic time periods, for example: The seven last plagues begin in September 1997 and and in 1998. Repeat of the TWO Witnesses of Revelation 11:3 and the 1260 days began in April 1994 an ends in September 1997.

We've also been given another chart from Last Day Ministries, Alvarado, Texas. They have based the 2nd coming upon the 6,000-year principle, have set prophetic time periods, and worship the the Sacred Name.

Then we have one from Tony Sucla, filled with prophetic time periods as follows: 30 days between the NSL and USL, 45 days between the death decree and deliverance, etc. He also worships the Sacred Name.

I have also received information on Jeanine Sautron's dreams and visions. She has set the close of human probation for March 7, 2005. Several years back I was introduced to her audiotapes, and I am amazed at how anyone can be deceived by her. The tapes were almost word for word quotes from Mrs. Whites writings and the parts that were not Mrs. Whites were of no value or were direct contradictions to the Spirit of Prophecy. I am not in possession of the tapes today and do not have the transcripts, nor do I wish to have them. It is enough for me to know that she is not in harmony with Mrs. Whit.

Without a doubt, even porters of reapplying prophetic time periods would even be amazed at how many time charts are floating around in this old world and how far apart their teachings are on their prophetic periods and dates.

It Is No Time for TIME EXCITEMENT, a very thorough Spirit of Prophecy compilation; and our We Are Not to SET TIME [WM-563].)

Can we date the Second Advent of Christ from the jubilee cycles?

Read this and you will find out.

Some people set post-1844 time prophecies on earlier time prophecies, such as the 1260 days or the 2300 days.

But there are those who set time, based on the jubilee cycle.

Obviously, a careful reading of the Spirit of Prophecy reveals that we should not set time after 1844 on ANY basis. (See our two in-depth studies for much more information on this: It Is No Time for TIME EXCITEMENT, a very thorough Spirit of Prophecy compilation; and our We Are Not to SET TIME [WM-563].)

But, all aside from other time-setting methods, can we not determine future dates from the jubilee? Here are facts you have been looking for, regarding time-setting predictions based on the jubilee cycles:

Here is the basic Bible passage on the jubilee:

And thou shalt number seven sabbaths of years unto thee, seven times seven years; and the space of the seven sabbaths of years shall be unto thee forty and nine years.

Then shalt thou cause the trumpet of the jubile to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month, in the day of atonement shall ye make the trumpet sound throughout all your land.

And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family.

A jubile shall that fiftieth year be unto you: ye shall not sow, neither reap that which groweth of itself  in it, nor gather the grapes in it of thy vine undressed.

For it is the jubile; it shall be holy unto you: ye shall eat the increase thereof out of the field.

In the year of this jubile ye shall return every man unto his possession. Leviticus 25:8-13.

(It should be noted that, in many KJV Bibles, the spelling is jubile, while the Spirit of Prophecy and current spelling is jubilee.)

Several principles are presented in the above Bible passage:

1 - The jubilee represents the time when we are freed from all our problems. Antitype: In a sense, we are delivered when we accept Christ as our Saviour, but the full release does not come until His Second Advent for His people. (More on this, below).

By every jubilee trumpet His [Christ's] name was sounded. Desire of Ages, 212.

2 - The typical jubilee occurred on the fiftieth year (Education, 43; 1 Bible Commentary, 1112). It occurred in the fiftieth year, after seven sabbatical cycles (seven groups of seven years). Antitype:Would the antitype, the Second Advent, also occur on a fiftieth year in the jubilee cycles? More on this below.

3 - The jubilee brought the return of property to its original owners. Antitype: Through sin, Adam and his descendants lost the first dominion. Through Christ, it will be restored, and the meek shall inherit the earth.

Every fiftieth year, the year of jubilee, every inheritance in the land was to be restored to its original owner. 1 Bible Commentary, 1112.

In the fiftieth, or year of jubilee, all landed property reverted to the original owner. Education, 43.

4 - There would be no need of planting or harvesting in the time of the jubilee. Antitype: Because human probation is forever ended, there will be no more need of missionary seed-sowing or harvesting.

The jubilee, described in Leviticus 25, was typical. Now let us look more closely at the antitype the antitypical jubilee:

1 - Specifically, the antitypical jubilee will, under no circumstances, begin until the Voice of God delivers His people, just prior to the Second Advent.

But there was one clear place of settled glory, whence came the voice of God like many waters, which shook the heavens and the earth . . Then commenced the jubilee, when the land should rest . . Soon appeared the great white cloud. Early Writings, 34-35 (p. 286 and Life Sketches, 103 are identical).

The Voice of God delivers His people from the power of the wicked, and the Second Advent quickly follows. Note that the jubilee only begins at this point; it does not end then.

2 - The antitypical jubilee will not occur, prior to that time, immediately before the Second Advent of Christ. It comes after the close of probation, and just before Jesus is seen in the clouds, returning for His own.

Therefore, contrary to what some say, the antitypical jubilee does not represent conversion, 1844, the beginning of the investigative judgment, when it passes to the cases of the living, or the general close of probation. The jubilee is not fulfilled until the time of the Second Advent.

3 - The antitypical jubilee is NOT the completion of a fifty-year cycle because it is an antitype! It does not come at the end of one of those literal cycles! How can we know this? because the jubilee is an antitype.

The jubilee is a type/antitype relationship; it is not a time prophecy.

4 - Antitypical fulfillments do not match the time lengths found in the types!

Example: the Sanctuary service: The typical daily service was 364 days long just under a year, while the antitypical was 18 centuries (Great Controversy, 421) in length. The typical yearly service was one day long, but the antitypical began in 1844, and is still in progress.

Types and antitypes are related by events and sequential relationships, not be time periods.

Do not confuse antitypes with time-span prophecies: The 2300-year prophecy was a time prophecy, but the antitypical sanctuary fulfillments are not. They have no inherent time spans predicted within them.

It is of interest that, although the types (the daily and yearly sanctuary service, and the jubilee cycle) have inherent time spans (one day out of 365, and one year out of fifty), those numbers do not carry over into the antitypes. It is only the principles which carry over.

What are the jubilee principles? Read them in the box on the bottom of page one of this tract.

5 - Not only are antitypes not time prophecies, they are not even proportional to the mathematical ratio of the types which they follow. The ratio of the yearly to the daily typical sanctuary service was 1 to 364. If the antitypical yearly had been 1/365th the length of the antitypical daily, it would only have lasted about five years! It is obvious there are no time-pattern correlations between the antitypes and types. (At the present time [1994], the ratio of yearly to daily is already quite skewed in favor of the length of the yearly [about 30 to 365]).

In the jubilee type, the jubilee was one year, concluding a cycle of 50. It had a mathematical proportion of 1 to 50. But the antitypical jubilee will come when God designs that it should. And, when it does come, it will last a very long time! The coming jubilee will be at least a thousand years in length. (In one sense, it could be no shorter than that, since the redeemed do not receive their land back the new earth until it is concluded. But, in another sense, the freedom of the jubilee will continue on forever.) Mathematically, a thousand-year jubilee ought to require 50,000 non-jubilee years before it.

For the above reasons, the various 50-year cycle theories (which teach that the Second Advent will come at the end of a certain number of 50 year periods) ARE NOT correct!

The above facts should be sufficient to bury the jubilee cycle theories, but here are additional facts which you should keep in mind:

1 - No one on earth knows when the typical jubilee cycles began. We just are not told, and there is no historical data to clarify the point. God has purposely hidden the fact, so we will not worship jubilee dates.

The first jubilee cycle began at some point after the Israelites entered the promised land. The entrance occurred 40 years after the Exodus but when did that happen?

2 - We do not know the date when the Red Sea was crossed, and the Exodus out of Egypt began.

Biblical scholars place the general time when the Exodus occurred at (1) the seventeenth centuryB.C., during the Hyksos period; (2) the sixteenth century B.C., when the Hyksos were expelled; (3) thefifteenth century B.C., under the eighteenth Egyptian dynasty (during the reign of Thutmose III); and (4) the thirteenth century B.C., under the nineteenth Egyptian dynasty (during the reign of Ramses II).

Adventist scholars, for several decades, have placed it as occurring in the fifteenth century B.C., during the reign of Thutmose III. After reviewing the data, the present writer has for a number of years agreed with that position. But that does not make it a known fact.

3 - Yet, even if we were correct on the century that would not tell us the year of the Exodus.

Keep in mind that, if we cannot know when the Israelites left Egypt, we cannot know when they entered the promised land 40 years later, and began the jubilee cycles.

4 - We cannot even have certainty as to the regnal years of Thutmose IIIor any other pharaoh or ruler in the second millennium B.C. Why not? because of a very special reason:

5 - We cannot accurately pinpoint any date in ancient Near-Eastern history before one date, about nine centuries after Thutmose III. That date is the 37th regnal year of  Nebuchadnezzar (which began at sunset on April 22, 568 B.C., and ended at sunset on April 11, 567 B.C.).

We know that dated year because of a clay tablet unearthed in Mesopotamia, which links that regnal year to very definite astronomical events (in this case, a rather complete collection of planetary locations throughout that particular year). That data cannot be duplicated for any other year in history, so we can be totally certain of that one date.

6 - We cannot with certainty link that dated year to earlier events.

Efforts are made to link that dated year (568/567 B.C.) to earlier Hebrew history (including Edwin Thiele and Siegfried Horns outstanding work), but, of course, we cannot have certainty about their conclusions. They may have partial accuracy, but how much we cannot know.

(However, it would not matter if they were accurate, since we have earlier noted that antitypical jubilees do not occur at the end of 50-year cycles.)

Believe not those who tell you we can know, with certainty the date of the Exodus. We do not have such certainty. Indeed, we do not even have clarity as to the pharaoh, during whose rule it occurred!

There are those who date the jubilee cycle as starting with the Exodus out of Egypt, and there are those who date it as beginning at the entrance into Canaan.

But that controversy between an Exodus date and an Entrance date only adds to the confusion of when the cycles began.

In this study, we will assume the following:

(1) The jubilee cycles did not begin at the Exodus, because a careful reading of Leviticus 25:8-16reveals that two aspects had to be fulfilled: first, the freeing of the people, and second, the receiving of the landed inheritance. Then, the 50-year cycle would begin and, at its end, the people were again freed, and the land again given to them. So, at the beginning of the cycle, the people must already have both: their freedom and their land.

(2) The jubilees were 50-year cycles, not 49-year cycles.

Every fiftieth year, the year of jubilee, every inheritance in the land was to be restored to its original owner. 1 Bible Commentary, 1112.

In the fiftieth, or year of jubilee, all landed property reverted to the original owner. Education, 43.

The people (or the children of the people) who owned the land, at the beginning of the 50-year cycle, were the ones who received it back at the end of the cycle so, at the beginning of the cycle, they had to own the land. As we shall see below, the Israelites did not receive their land until several years after the entrance into Canaan.

At the Exodus from Egypt, the people received their freedom, but not until after the entrance into Canaan did they receive their land. Therefore, the position is here taken that an Exodus date for the beginning of the jubilee cycle would be untenable.

The jubilee was known as the year of release and return. It took both to make it a jubilee.

Next, what was the date of the entrance into Canaan, and certain events thereafter:

7 - First, the Israelites had to cross the Jordan River into the promised land. After that, they had to begin settling it. We do not know when either event occurred. But we do know that they were two distinct, separate events.

We do not know when the Israelites crossed into Canaan. How could we know, since we do not know when they left Egypt, 40 years earlier.

8 - We do not know the year that the Israelites actually received their inheritance. For it was not until then, that the 50-year cycle could begin.

The problem here is that the Israelites did not receive their inheritance the same year they crossed the Jordan River.

Even if we did know the year-date when the Israelites miraculously crossed the Jordan and entered Palestine, we still would not know when the first typical 50-year cycle began because we do not know how many years elapsed between the crossing of the Jordan and the division of the land to the Israelites.

The first 50-year cycle would not begin in the middle of the lengthy war against the Canaanites, for the Israelites did not possess the land until it was completed.

We can assume that the first jubilee cycle began when the Israelites had rest from war and could begin peacefully settling the promised land. We are told that, from the time they passed over Jordan, until they were able to settle in the land, several years elapsed (Patriarchs and Prophets, 510-511, quoted below).

9 - Unfortunately, we do not know the date when the land was divided up between the tribes, so they could receive their land. All we know is that it occurred several years after the Jordan was crossed. Until the land was divided (Joshua 13 to 22), the people could not receive their landed inheritance. This is important, since it was the task of the jubilee to restore land which they owned, which had been sold or lost during the 50-year interval (Leviticus 25:10, 13).

One by one the cities were taken, and Hazor, the stronghold of the confederacy, was burned. The war was continued for several years, but its close found Joshua master of Canaan. And the land had rest from war. Patriarchs and Prophets, 510-511 [Emphasis ours].

So, several years after the entrance into Canaan, Joshua had the responsibility of assigning the land to the people.

The whole land, both the parts already conquered and that which was yet unsubdued, was to be apportioned among the tribes. Patriarchs and Prophets, 511.

10 - We do not know when the declaration was proclaimed that the first cycle had begun.

Before the war against the Canaanites was completed, it had been halted (Joshua 13:1-13; Patriarchs and Prophets, 511, 543-545), and we do not know at what point Joshua (or the priests) declared that the first year of the actual 50-year jubilee cycle began. There had to be an announced initial year, but we do not know when it was.

The observance of the jubilee would be obligatory after the Israelites had taken possession of the promised land and had cultivated the soil for 49 years. After completing this study, the present writer came upon this item:

The ancient Talmudic tradition is that it took the Israelites seven years to conquer Canaan, and the first sabbatic year was the 21st year, and the first jubilee was the 64th year after they entered Canaan. That is the Talmudic tradition; take it for what it is worth. We know that many Talmudic traditions are incorrect.

11 - We do not know the initial or terminal year-date of any later jubilee cycle.

Several dates for jubilees, later in Jewish history, have been suggested, but there is no clear-cut evidence for any of them.

One writer declares that each time a trumpet was blown to call a meeting, it was the beginning of a jubilee. It is true that the trumpet was blown to announce the beginning of the jubilee (Leviticus 25:9),but (1) trumpets were blown yearly to announce the feast of trumpets and the day of atonement, and (2) the jubilee was not a meeting! The crisis in Joel (Joel 2:1), for example, is not a jubilee.

Someone has said that the blowing of trumpets at a meeting called by Hezekiah indicated a jubilee (2 Chronicles 29:27-28), but read the entire chapter. Hezekiah was rededicating the temple, and seeking the forgiveness of God for the sins of the people.

It has been speculated, by someone that the return of the Jews to Jerusalem, at the end of the 70-year prophecy of Jeremiah, would be the end of one of the jubilee cycles. That is only surmise.

Still others say that the crucifixion of Christ surely must be the end of a jubilee cycle. That also is conjecture. We cannot base truth on supposition; we must have clear statements from Gods Word. The artful transformation of assumption into truth is how Sunday sacredness entered Christianity.

We have no idea when the jubilee cycles began, how many were kept, or the date when any ended. It is a total mystery; a mystery purposely hidden from us. Our kind Father knew it was not safe for us to have that information.

12 - There is also a question whether the jubilee cycles were 50 years in length, or only 49 years.

Some take the position that, after the 49th year, the next year (the jubilee year) began the next 49-year cycle.

However, we find no direct evidence of that in the Bible or the Spirit of Prophecy, so throughout this study, we have assumed a 50-year cycle, not a 49-year cycle.

Keep in mind that the 50th year was to be hallowed; it was not a commonplace year like those preceding it.

And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year. Leviticus 25:10.

It was not a normal year, for there was to be no tillage of the soil during it (Leviticus 25:11). It is an error to suggest that the jubilee was just a common working year, part of the 49.

After preparing this study, the following quotation was found:

The jubilee year could not itself be the first of the next 49 years because in Leviticus 25:10, not only is the fiftieth year expressly named as the year of Jubilee, but the forty-nine years which make seven Sabbatic years are expressly distinguished from it. (R.W. Winer, Jubeljahr).

It is significant that such a controversy should exist. If the experts cannot even agree on the length of the jubilee, how will they ever manage to date future events by it?

It is of interest that the trumpet is blown to mark the jubilee. Here are several intriguing passages to consider. They link the antitypical jubilee with the Second Advent of Christ:

Then shalt thou cause the trumpet of the jubile to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month, in the day of atonement shall ye make the trumpet sound throughout all your land.

And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family. Leviticus 25:9-10.

For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.1 Thessalonians 4:16-17.

In trumpet tones, Christ will send His angels to gather His own from the earth:

They shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And He shall send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. Matthew 24:30-31.

But every man in his own order: Christ the first-fruits; afterward they that are Christ's at His coming. In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 1 Corinthians 15:23, 52.

In one Bible verse, the jubilee is called the year of liberty.

But if he give a gift of his inheritance to one of his servants, then it shall be his to the year of liberty; after it shall return to the prince: but his inheritance shall be his sons for them. Ezekiel 46:17.

The word jubilee comes from the Hebrew word, yobel, which means rams horn, or trumpet. The word originally meant a loud trumpet blast. The trumpet blast occurred on the day of atonement in the 50th year.

Here is an interesting passage to conclude this study. It is figurative of the great final gathering of the faithful from the four winds, at the Second Coming of Christ for His people:

And it shall come to pass in that day, that the great trumpet shall be blown, and they shall come which were ready to perish in the land of Assyria, and the outcasts in the land of Egypt, and shall worship the Lord in the holy mount at Jerusalem. Isaiah 27:13.

For more information on the jubilee, read Leviticus 25:8-55; 27:17-24; and Numbers 36:4.

The Second Advent follows the investigative judgment and the close of probation. The Talmudic tradition is that the rams horn was blown on the day of atonement of the 50th year after the day of atonement service (described in Leviticus 16) was completed.

How very fitting that would be! The Second Advent coming after the completion of the investigative judgment and the cleansing of the Sanctuary!

The restitution of all things, mentioned in Acts 3:21 is generally recognized as referring to the Second Advent of Christ. What is not as well known, is that it also refers to the antitypical fulfillment of the jubilee.

Prior to that time, the Holy Spirit is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession. Ephesians 1:13-14 (Romans 8:19-23).

Isaiah 37:30 (2 Kings 19:29 almost identical) also refers to a jubilee-type experience (of two sabbatical years together: the 49th and 50th years). However, the context indicates it is only a jubilee-like experience, not an actual jubilee. For Isaiah is given this experience as a sign. If it was a normal event, it would not be a sign.

It is of interest that it is due to the jubilee cycles, that the family inheritance records were able to be preserved in the temple. From these records the genealogy of Christ's ancestors was taken.

How thankful we can be that we know the truth about the jubilee!

On the tenth day of the seventh month of the fiftieth year, a great trumpet was blown. By this means, the public authorities proclaimed that the year-long jubilee had begun!

Universal redemption of land and people had arrived! All prisoners and captives obtained their liberties, slaves were declared free, and debts were absolved.

The land, on the sabbatic year, was neither sowed nor reaped, but allowed to enjoy with its inhabitants a sabbath of repose. Its natural produce was the common property of all. No one was permitted to hoard any of it for himself. There was total unselfishness for a time.

The fulfillment of the law of entail had arrived: Every inheritance throughout the land was restored to its original owner.

Jubilee was a type of our eternal inheritance! Oh, how we long for it! Soon it will come!
