What is a Liver Cleanse?

A liver cleanse is an all natural procedure designed to detoxify, flush and purge the liver of fatty deposits, built up toxins, and accumulated stones. One is allicin, a sulfur compound formed in raw garlic after a clove is cut or crushed. Allicin is a major source of garlic’s taste and smell. Garlic is supposed to lower cholesterol, as well as fight cancer, hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease and the common cold.     Even the garlic fumes kill and a way to get garlic into the nasal passages and sinuses is to hold some crushed garlic up close to your nares and breathe the fumes in. You can breathe the fumes in deeply to get them into the throat and lungs. A person can use a hair drier on cool to blow fumes onto open sores. 

    You really don’t get much allicin by eating raw garlic because saliva neutralizes some of the allicin created by chewing the garlic and as it reaches the stomach the stomach, acid neutralizes it the rest of the way so that little or no allicin enters the duodenum that way. A well designed and manufactured garlic pill will have an enteric coating so that it doesn’t dissolve until it gets to the duodenum.

  2. Catnip tea in the afternoon. This would be two quarts of liquid for the day.

Start sprouting broccoli sprouts - buy 24 large mouth Ball or Mason Jars - and a special sprouting lid to get started - so you can make this broccoli sprouts yourself in quantity. You can purchase organic broccoli seeds from Johnny's at 207-437-4301. Item number 148, four ounces are $9.00 or a pound for $12.00. Non-organic seeds can probably be purchased through farm supply stores or other seed catalogs. You can also call Jaffe Brothers at 619-749-1133 for instructions on how to sprout. They also sell sprouting lids to apply to Ball jars which make the entire process quite convenient.
  4. Until the broccoli sprouts are ready, start juicing organic broccoli and drinking it. Strain it through a fine mesh strainer - so your body can focus on using the raw live enzymes and not work to digest fiber.
What to Eat:

For Breakfast: You can squeeze a lemon, grapefruit and an orange for breakfast. Citrus fruits are God's natural cleansing agents, especially lemons!

Afternoon: Beet, cucumber and carrot juiced together will remove stones from anybody. You could put a wedge of red cabbage in and juice that with it - you could ad a little bit of ginger. Carrots and purple grapes both contain multiple nutrients that can target and kill cancer cells. One researcher thinks that it is the oxalic acid in carrots that cures the cancer. He may be right. 

Some treatments use natural substances that target and kill cancer cells. Laetrile, or Vitamin B17, is a perfect example.

When you kill all of the microbes inside of a cancer cell, the cancer cell will revert into a normal cell because there is nothing to block the production of ATP energy. This is the ideal way to cure cancer because there are no dead cells and no debris from dead cells.

But most natural cancer treatments work in other ways.

Small quantities of fresh broccoli sprouts contain as much cancer protection as larger amounts of the mature vegetable sold in food markets, according to researchers at Johns Hopkins University. Just 5 grams (0.17 ounces) of sprouts contain concentrations of the compound glucoraphanin equal to that found in 150 grams (5.2 ounces) of mature broccoli. The compound is a precursor to sulforaphane, proven in animal studies to boost cell enzymes that protect against molecular damage from cancer-causing chemicals.

Sulforaphane has been shown to mobilize, or induce, the body's natural cancer protection resources and help reduce the risk of malignancy. Broccoli is the best source of the chemical precursor to sulforaphane -- glucoraphanin. Now, broccoli sprouts are an "exceptionally rich source" of inducers of cellular enzymes for "detoxifying" chemical carcinogens -- cancer causing compounds. Some of these compounds are potent enhancers of phase 2 enzymes, which speed the detoxication of electrophiles and reactive oxygen metabolites. Therefore, they say, induction of phase 2 enzymes by these compounds can "...protect cells against mutagenesis and neoplasia."

The researchers attempted to calculate how much broccoli one would have to eat in order to produce a significant degree of protection against cancer, based on epidemiologic evidence. They found that one would have to eat about two pounds of an average broccoli a week in order to reduce, say, one's risk of colon cancer by about 50%.

An additional complication is that it is impossible to determine by the looks of this cruciferous vegetable alone or even with knowledge of how and where it was grown whether you are buying the 'high-inducer' or 'low-inducer' broccoli. The enzyme-inducing abilities of samples taken from 22 varieties of fresh and 7 brands of frozen mature broccoli vary greatly. Only sophisticated scientific measurements can determine the concentrations.

But fresh broccoli sprouts offer an alternative. One can get away with eating 10 to 100 times lower quantities. Three day old sprouts have the additional advantage that they're far more uniform in their potency. Broccoli sprouts look and taste something like alfalfa sprouts, according to the researchers. The report also notes that small quantities of broccoli sprout extracts markedly reduced the size of rat mammary tumors that were induced by chemical carcinogens.

The researchers refer to the concept of "chemoprotection" -- deliberate efforts to increase the body's own defense mechanisms to reduce susceptibility to carcinogens by administration of substances that can be precisely identified, and ideally, delivered in the diet. The interesting aspect of chemoprotection strategies is that they're almost never organ-specific. Chemoprotection produces a general cancer protective effect which blocks multiple steps -- a cascade of steps -- that are common to cancer formation.

INSIGHT: At the present time, broccoli sprouts are not being grown commercially. However you can grow them yourself quite easily. A small amount of spouts go a long way. A pound of sprouts will probably make over ten pounds of sprouts which from the researchers calculations translates up to as much cancer protecting phytochemicals as 1000 pounds (half a ton) of broccoli! The other major benefit is that the sprouts don't smell as you don't have to cook them. They are eaten raw, usually as an addition to salad. I have already ordered my sprouts. I suspect that there are similar benefits for many of the other vegetables when eaten as sprouts. From the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (1997;94:10367-10372)

Sprouting Instructions:

Sprouting Time 5-7 days Temperatures 60-80

Yield 1 Tbs seed=1-1 1/2 cups sprouts

Place seeds in the jar and cover with cheesecloth or other porous material. Secure the cloth with a rubber band. Fill the jar full with filtered water and let soak overnight. I have had some patients tell me that distilled water actually works much better than filtered or bottled water as it seems to increase the percentage of seeds that sprout successfully.

In the morning drain off the water. The cloth will keep the seeds in the jar. Rinse seeds with water again and let drain. You can also use reusable plastic sprouting lids (available from Jaffe Brothers at 619-749-1133) which attach to Ball jars. This avoids having to use new cheesecloth each time. Put the container on its side in a dark location that stays about 70 degrees. Rinse twice each day with water and drain. Continue the rinse cycle until harvested. When sprouts are 1-2 inches long you can put them in the light to green them up. You can rinse out the hulls or skim them of the top of the water with a spoon. They are not harmful to eat but removing them minimizes spoilage when sprouts are stored. Sprouts are best stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator and keep for about one week.

The year was 1905. A fund raiser was needed to assist Adventist medical institutions in getting out of debt. Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, inventor of corn flakes and sundry other foods, wrote a book entitled Living Temple to serve this purpose. But Living Temple contained elements of pantheistic philosophy, something akin to New Age teachings, which later evolved into the Omega of the triad of gods apostasy, and so it could not be used. As a substitute, Ellen White donated her book, Ministry of HealingShe should be given a Nobel prize posthumously. God told her that cancer is caused by a germ. God does speak to people, you know. Jesus says "My sheep KNOW my Voice!"

On page 313 of Ministry of Healing we read this intriguing statement:

Flesh was never the best food; but its use is now doubly objectionable, since disease in animals is so rapidly increasing. Those who use flesh foods little know what they are eating. Often if they could see the animals when living and know the quality of the meat they eat, they would turn from it with loathing. People are continually eating flesh that is filled with tuberculous and cancerous germs. Tuberculosis, cancer, and other fatal diseases are thus communicated.—emphasis added.

The above claims that cancer is caused by a "germ," which is some sort of microorganism like a bacteria or fungus or virus. Of course, it's common knowledge in today's medical and scientific communities that viruses cause cancer, but it wasn't common knowledge back then. To illustrate, consider the following:

Rous, pronounced rows, Francis Peyton, pronounced PAY tuhn (1879-1970), an American medical researcher, proved that viruses cause some types of cancer. In 1910, Rous ground up a cancerous tumor from a chicken and filtered out everything larger than a virus. The resulting liquid produced cancer when injected into other chickens. For many years, scientists scoffed at Rous’s discovery. These scientists believed cancer could not be caused by a virus because the disease is not contagious. In 1966, Rous shared the Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine for his work.—"Rous, Francis Peyton," World Book Encyclopedia.

So in 1910, a maverick medical researcher proposed that cancer was caused by a virus and could be transmitted from chicken to chicken. He was subsequently derided by the scientific community for proposing such a ludicrous idea, and then waited fifty-six years before being awarded his Nobel Prize. Do you suppose that perhaps Mr. Rous "plagiarized" his novel idea from Ministry of Healing?

More importantly, how in the world did Ellen White know that cancer is caused by an infectious agent?

Cancer Caused by Dormant Oncogenes

In the year 1864 Ellen White wrote the following statement:
Cancerous humor, which would lay dormant in the system their life-time, is inflamed, and commences its eating, destructive work.—Appeal to Mothers, p. 27.

Rather interesting.

"Cancerous humor" is terminology that is a bit antiquated today. Back then, "humor" typically referred to some sort of bodily fluid. It therefore appears to us that Ellen White was talking about something other than muscle or bone, something that had the potential of either remaining dormant or becoming cancerous after becoming "inflamed."

In 1989, J. Michael Bishop and Harold Varmus won the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for their work on cancer. Specifically, they showed how normal genes in cells could be converted by viruses or chemicals into something that causes cancer:

Working with the Rous sarcoma virus, known to cause cancer in chickens, Bishop and Varmus found that a gene similar to the cancer-causing gene within the virus was also present in healthy cells.

In 1976 Bishop and Varmus, together with two colleagues—Dominique Stehelin and Peter Vogt—published their findings, concluding that the virus had taken up the gene responsible for the cancer from a normal cell. After the virus had infected the cell and begun its usual process of replication, it incorporated the gene into its own genetic material. Subsequent research showed that such genes can cause cancer in several ways. Even without viral involvement, these genes can be converted by certain chemical carcinogens into a form that allows uncontrolled cellular growth.

Because the mechanism described by Bishop and Varmus seemed common to all forms of cancer, their work proved invaluable to cancer research. By 1989 scientists had identified more than 40 genes having cancer-causing potential in animals.—"Bishop, J(ohn) Michael," Encyclopedia Britannica Ultimate Reference Suite 2004 DVD.

Thus there is indeed something subcellular in the human body that can remain dormant or can be triggered in a number of ways to become cancerous.

So Bishop and Varmus also won the Nobel prize for their work. Ambitious scientists out there could take note of this trend. If they can locate some oddity in Mrs. White's writings that if proven true would benefit humanity, and if they can find a way to prove it to be true, they might be able to win a Nobel prize, too.

14 Foods That Cleanse the Liver

Society has created a sad state for our over-processed livers. Anytime we overeat or eat processed or fried foods, and, anytime we are exposed to environmental pollutants or stress, the liver becomes overworked and overloaded. When the liver is taxed, it cant process toxins and fat in an efficient way. There are many foods that can help cleanse the liver naturally by stimulating the natural ability to clean toxic waste from the body

In the past, I have discussed my favorite cleansing foods. This list is a little more specific and focuses mainly on foods that can help cleanse your liver. In addition to taking a liver-cleansing supplement, and performing at least two liver and gallbladder cleanses per year, eating the following foods is the best way to keep your liver healthy and functioning the way you need it to. I would encourage you to incorporate these liver cleanse foods into your weekly diet.

DescriptionThe herb Trigonella foenum-graecum, is a reminder that the Romans imported it from Greece as a desirable crop, “Greek hay”, that was used as a cattle food. However, the seed became a popular spice and has long been used as a nourishing dietary herb in the Middle East to which it is native, and in India and the Far East. It is more familiar in many countries as a component of curry powder, to which it contributes a curry-like taste. It is also used raw or roasted to give flavor to mango chutney and to imitation maple syrup and to some artificial licorice preparations. Other constituents impart a strong celery-like odor, and they are utilized in the fragrance industry.

It is used as an appetizer, a tonic and an aphrodisiac, and it is included in many foods and beverages. Fenugreek has a long history of dubious indications, including fevers, colic, flatulence, dyspepsia, dysentery, cough, tuberculosis, edema, rickets, leg ulcers, gout, diabetes and baldness. Useful PartsThe seeds of fenugreek are the source of the spice, but the sprouts may be eaten raw in salads.
Medicinal PropertiesThe seed is a source of the steroidal saponin diosgenin, which can be used to manufacture many pharmaceuticals, such as progesterone. The chemical trigonelline is converted into niacin when the seed is roasted. The seeds also provide a mucilaginous fiber content that may benefit the bowel. Of more current interest is the evidence that fenugreek has a minor hypoglycemic effect, thus suggesting it may, in fact, help with diabetes. There is also some evidence that it can reduce hypercholesterolemia in animals.

Historical View“The use of fenugreek as a medicinal agent is now obsolete in Europe and the United States; but in India the seeds are largely employed by the natives, both as food and medicine, while the fresh plant is consumed as a vegetable. In Alexandria also the seedlings are eaten as a great delicacy. Formerly the seeds were employed in the preparation of emollient cataplasms, fomentations, and enemata; but were never given internally.”
