I want to pose a simple question to start this study with: - Is our obedience to Christ’s commands and requirements as laid down in the Scriptures essential to our salvation?

 The overwhelming majority of Protestant Christians including the majority of Sabbath-keeping Adventists would answer this question with a definite “NO”! They teach that our obedience to Christ’s commands and requirements contained within the Scriptures plays no part in our salvation whatsoever. They assert that our obedience to Christ is only a fruitof our salvation. Coupled with this popular misconception is the Evangelical belief of “I AM SAVED”.

In this study I am going to give the simple but unambiguous Bible and Spirit of Prophecy evidence that answers the above question positively, with an unqualified “YES”! I shall also give you some very plain texts which disprove the “I AM SAVED” theory. It is almost like these professed Christians are reading a completely different Bible from us, for them to come up with such a radically different answer to such a simple but vital question. And the thing that will make this truth stand out even more pointedly, is the fact, that ALL the Bible texts that will be used within this study will be taken entirely from the New Testament Scriptures. Let us now proceed to examine the inspired evidence in support of this statement.

 This SECTION of the study, will deal with the accusation of “Legalism”, that is often hurled at us by those of an Evangelical theology. And by Legalism, I mean the belief that our obedience through God’s enabling grace to God’s Moral Law is one essential part in our salvation. The other essential parts being repentance and faith in Christ as our Atoning Saviour. By the time I have finished this study, you will be able to clearly see that those who raise this accusation against us, are in fact the ones who are perverting the Scriptures and who are standing on the side of the “Modern Revivals” false gospel.

Jesus by learning obedience through the things which he suffered during his earthly life, has become the Author of eternal salvation to all those who obey him.

Hebrews 5:8 & 9: - “Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him.”

Only those who do or perform the will of our heavenly Father shall be able to enter into heaven. While those who call Jesus Lord, but who are workers of iniquity, will not be able to enter into heaven.

Matthew 7:21 - 23: - “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

In Luke’s account of Jesus’ words, he quotes our Lord asking the relevant question, Why do we call him Lord, if we do not do the things that he tells us to?

Luke 6:46: - “And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?

Jesus taught that keeping the Ten Commandments was essential to entering into the experience of eternal life.

Matthew 19:16 - 19: - “And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? [there is] none good but one, [that is], God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Honour thy father and [thy] mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”

In the last book of the New Testament – the Book of Revelation, the saints of God at the end of time are clearly identified as being Commandment Keepers.

Revelation 12:17: - “And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed,which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.”

Revelation 14:12: - “Here is the patience of the saints: here [are] they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.”

Jesus has stated in the Book of Revelation that those who do his Father’s Commandments will be able to enter into the New Jerusalem through its gates, while without the Holy City will be those who break God’s Commandments. This obedience to the Father’s Commandments is the doing of the Father’s will Jesus referred to in Matthew 7:21.

Revelation 22:12 - 16: - “And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward [is] with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.  I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. Blessed [are] they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.For without [are] dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, [and] the bright and morning star.”

NOTE: - A careful reading of this entire passage reveals that there is no change of speaker throughout. Jesus is the One who is speaking to John all the words found within this passage. Therefore, the expression “his commandments” can only be referring to his Father’s Commandments; other wise, Jesus would have said “my commandments”.

And this truth is clearly reinforced by the Spirit of Prophecy.

R. & H., Book 1, p. 18: - “Let those who break God's law and teach others to do so, denounce us as fallen from grace because we keep all ten of his immutable precepts, it will not harm us. We have the satisfaction of knowing, that while they curse, Jesus has pronounced a blessing. Says the true Witness, the only Begotten of the Father, "Blessed are they that do his [the Father's] commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the City." Rev. xxii, 14.”  {RH, June 10, 1852 par. 17}

Paul taught that the wrath of God comes upon the “children of disobedience”.

Ephesians 5:5 & 6: - “For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.

Colossians 3:5 & 6: - “Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience.

The Testimony of Jesus has clearly defined the ONE way of salvation in the following statement. Its teachings are so clear that it should leave you in no doubt, that what is being taught concerning salvation by ALL the Protestant Churches, and by the SDA Denominational structure, is clearly out of harmony with the teachings of inspiration.

Sketches from the Life of Paul, p. 192: - “It is Satan's studied effort to divert the minds of men from the one way of salvation, -- faith in Christ, AND obedience to the law of God.

The following statement from the Testimony of Jesus is also very clear on the issue of obedience to God’s Law of Ten Commandments, being one of the necessary conditions to our receiving the favor of God. The other two conditions are, repentance for past transgressions, and faith in Christ’s atoning sacrifice.

Sketches from the Life of Paul, pp. 161 & 162: - “He [that is, Paul – compiler] vindicated the law of ten commandments, and held it up before the people as a rule of life. He showed that all men are under the most solemn obligation to obey that law, which Christ came to make honorable. He taught that Christ is the only one who can release men from the consequences of breaking the divine law; and that it is only by repentance for their past transgressions, faith in the atoning sacrifice of Christ, and a life of obedience, that men can hope to receive the favor of God.  {LP 161.3}

The Testimony of Jesus has recorded the simple truth that from the very beginning of the revelation of the Plan of Salvation by Jesus to the Holy Angels, the Son of God revealed that through his ransom for fallen man, he would restore fallen man to favour with God, through the merits of his blood AND obedience to the Law of God.

Spirit of Prophecy, Volume 1, p. 45: - “He [that is, Jesus – compiler]  told them that he had been pleading with his Father, and had offered to give his life a ransom, and take the sentence of death upon himself, that through him man might find pardon; that through the merits of his blood, and obedience to the law of God, they could have the favor of God, and be brought into the beautiful garden, and eat of the fruit of the tree of life.”

One of the most prominent of the false doctrines of the “Modern Revivals”, is that obedience to God’s Law is NOT necessary to salvation; that all we have to do is to believe in Jesus and we are safe or saved.

1884 Great Controversy, p. 297: - “How wide the contrast between these words of Paul and those that come from many of the pulpits of today. The people are taught that obedience to God's law is not necessary to salvation; that they have only to believe in Jesus, and they are safe.  {4SP 297.2}

NOTE: - This is the common Evangelical Protestant “I AM SAVED BY FAITH ALONE GOSPEL”. This now leads me to consider,WHY THE COMMON “I AM SAVED” TEACHING IS NOT BIBLICAL: -
