How Should We KEEP the Sabbath?

On the Sabbath I was pained to the soul to hear, by the side of my tent, an earnest conversation in regard to houses and lands, and the prospect of property's rising in value. I thought it must be those not of our faith, who were thus engaged in talking on worldly matters on the Sabbath day; but looking from my tent, I saw it was one of our brethren and another man who were occupied in this way. This brother should have been wholly in earnest, that the meeting might be a blessing to Selma; but alas! his heart and mind were on temporal, worldly things. While claiming to be a Sabbath-keeper, he was doing business with mind and heart and voice. Saysthe Scripture, “If thou turn away thy foot from the Sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the Sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord honorable; and shalt honor him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father; for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.”

I hope that this brother will have a pure, sincere heart, and will be a doer of the commandments of the Lord; then he will be a light to shine forth to others. But, if his profession of belief and reverence for the Sabbath is only a form, he will be a body of darkness to the church in Selma, or wherever he may go. He has not that faith that will venture something for the sake of the truth. The truth is kept apart from his life. It does not mold and fashion his character. Unless he is converted in heart, he will not practice the truth, however much he may claim to believe it.

We heard two other brethren talking of the railroads that were to be laid in different sections of the country, and commenting on the profitableness of investing in lands in those parts of the State. Here we saw that in a meeting of about ten days, all the believers in the truth could not leave worldly thoughts and speculations behind them, to engage unreservedly in the worship of God. I was led with pain to inquire how many of these poor souls had opened through their hearts a highway for the traffic of the world, and had closed the door to Jesus and the truth. I said, It is such thoughts, such heart service to the world, that keeps the blessing of God from our meetings; for the Lord will pour out his Spirit only upon those who really hunger and thirst after righteousness. If there ever was need of earnest, heart-felt prayers to God, mingled with living faith, it is in this our day of opportunities, of dangers, of trials. God will not revive his work in any church unless it is sincerely desired, and earnestly sought for.

We are very grateful to God that he helped his servants to preach the word, and enabled them to give most valuable instruction in these meetings. We are assured that many souls were benefited. A number came forward for prayer and hearty confessions were made. There was a brother present who had been converted at the camp-meeting in Selma a year before. He has since been a worker in the cause of his Master. Through his influence, several came to the meeting, and were converted to the truth. During the meeting, he and his wife went out a distance of twelve miles from the encampment, and brought in a lady acquaintance who had held an important position of trust in connection with the Arizona State Legislature. She embraced the truth while at the meeting. How much more of this work might be done by the members of our churches! This brother provided comfortable accommodations and restaurant fare for these people; for he felt deeply in earnest for their souls. He had opportunity to see the result of his interest; for when the call was made for the European Mission, one of the converts pledged fifty dollars; another, twenty-five; and another, five dollars. There was not much time after the seed was sown before the harvest was gathered. We have reason to magnify the grace of God that has done wonderful things.

We could not urge our brethren at this small camp-meeting to make large pledges to the European Mission fund; for many of them were residents of Fresno, and had pledged $30,000 toward erecting church, mission, and school buildings. However, $3,125 were pledged for the European work. One thousand dollars were pledged at the meeting in Fresno. Eighty dollars were raised by the children for the London mission, and money was provided to defray the camp-meeting expenses. We thank the Lord for the liberality of our brethren, and we hope and pray that the blessing of the Lord will rest upon those who are striving to do their duty in supporting home and foreign missions. We need, not only money for this work, but also men who will give themselves to the cause of God.

The messengers should be laborers together with God. The harvest of souls is to be secured only by deep, heart-felt intercession with the Lord of the harvest. We must bear a decided testimony to the people. Direct appeals must be made, to awaken the church from its slumbering condition. Those who have a knowledge of the truth must be living witnesses for Christ; that their light may shine forth to others. There must be faithful work done in the pulpit and out of the pulpit. Close, searching, personal labor must be done to prepare the way for the Lord to work upon minds and hearts. We must have less of self, and more of Jesus. Every individual in the church should examine himself, to see whether or not he is in the truth. This close heart-searching is essential. Prayers of faith must be continually ascending to God; and when he gives us tokens of good, let us manifest our appreciation by praising him from whom all blessing flow" THE REVIEW AND HERALD, June 26, 1888.

The Desire Of Ages, page 204, paragraph 1: The Jews had so perverted the law that they made it a yoke of bondage. Their meaningless requirements had become a byword among other nations. Especially was the Sabbath hedged in by all manner of senseless restrictions. It was not to them a delight, the holy of the lord, and honorable. The scribes and pharisees had made its observance an intolerable burden. A Jew was not allowed to kindle a fire nor even to light a candle on the SabbathAs a consequence the people were dependent upon the gentiles for many services which their rules forbade them to do for themselves. They did not reflect that if these acts were sinful, those who employed others to perform them were as guilty as if they had done the work themselves. They thought that salvation was restricted to the jews, and that the condition of all others, being already hopeless, could be made no worse. But god has given no commandments which cannot be obeyed by all. His laws sanction no unreasonable or selfish restrictions.

"I was shown that God’s people dwell too much under a cloud. It is not the will of God for His people to live in unbelief." Spiritual Gifts, vol. 4, 148.

The reason that some are under a cloud is because of carelessness in Sabbath-keeping: "Although they may rest from physical toil upon the Sabbath, their tongues speak out what is in their minds; hence these words concerning cattle, crops, losses, and gains. All this is Sabbath breaking. . . . Ministers . . .should kindly and solemnly reprove those who engage in worldly conversation upon the Sabbath and at the same time claim to be Sabbathkeepers . . . the angels were turning from those who failed to appreciate the sacredness of God’s sanctified day, and were removing from them their light and their strength. I saw them overshadowed with a cloud, desponding, and frequently sad. They felt a lack of the Spirit of God."Testimonies, vol. 2, 703–705.

Others are under a cloud because of lack of faith, habits of negative thinking, anxiety and depression. (See Messages to Young People, 363.) We must all come out from under these clouds if we are to receive the latter rain. "We cannot exert a correct influence when we are under a cloud of anxiety and depression. We must reach out the hand of faith, and grasp the hand of our Redeemer. We must not wait for the latter rain. It is coming upon all who will recognize and appropriate the dew and showers of grace that fall upon us. When we gather up the fragments of light, when we appreciate the sure mercies of God, who loves to have us trust Him, then every promise will be fulfilled." Manuscript Releases, vol. 1, 177. Revelation 20:4, "And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years." 


Others who are well acquainted with the Bible evidences that the seventh day is the Sabbath, enter into partnership with men who have no respect for God’s holy day. A Sabbathkeeper cannot allow men in his employ, paid by his money, to work on the Sabbath. If, for the sake of gain, he allows the business in which he has an interest to be carried on on the Sabbath by his unbelieving partner, he is equally guilty with the unbeliever; and it is his duty to dissolve the relation, however much he may lose by so doing. Men may think they cannot afford to obey God, but they cannot afford to disobey Him. Those who are careless in their observance of the Sabbath will suffer great loss.—The Review and Herald, March 18, 1884.


The Sabbath was embodied in the law given from Sinai; but it was not then first made known as a day of rest. The people of Israel had a knowledge of it before they came to Sinai. On the way thither the Sabbath was kept. When some profaned it, the Lord reproved them, saying, "How long refuse ye to keep My commandments and My laws?" Ex. 16:28.
 
The Sabbath was not for Israel merely, but for the world. It had been made known to man in Eden, and, like the other precepts of the Decalogue, it is of imperishable obligation. Of that law of which the fourth commandment forms a part, Christ declares, "Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in nowise pass from the law." So long as the heavens and the earth endure, the Sabbath will continue as a sign of the Creator's power. And when Eden shall bloom on earth again, God's holy rest day will be honored by all beneath the sun. "From one Sabbath to another" the inhabitants of the glorified new earth shall go up "to worship before Me, saith the Lord." Matt. 5:18; Isa. 66:23.
 
No other institution which was committed to the Jews tended so fully to distinguish them from surrounding nations as did the Sabbath. God designed that its observance should designate them as His worshipers. It was to be a token of their separation from idolatry, and their connection with the true God. But in order to keep the Sabbath holy, men must themselves be holy. Through faith they must become partakers of the righteousness of Christ. When the command was given to Israel, "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy," the Lord said also to them, "Ye shall be holy men unto Me." Ex. 20:8; 22:31. Only thus could the Sabbath distinguish Israel as the worshipers of God.
 
As the Jews departed from God, and failed to make the righteousness of Christ their own by faith, the Sabbath lost its significance to them. Satan was seeking to exalt himself and to draw men away from Christ, and he worked to pervert the Sabbath, because it is the sign of the power of Christ. The Jewish leaders accomplished the will of Satan by surrounding God's rest day with burdensome requirements. In the days of Christ the Sabbath had become so perverted that its observance reflected the character of selfish and arbitrary men rather than the character of the loving heavenly Father. The rabbis virtually represented God as giving laws which it was impossible for men to obey. They led the people to look upon God as a tyrant, and to think that the observance of the Sabbath, as He required it, made men hard-hearted and cruel. It was the work of Christ to clear away these misconceptions. Although the rabbis followed Him with merciless hostility, He did not even appear to conform to their requirements, but went straight forward, keeping the Sabbath according to the law of God. 



Reproof for SabbathbreakingWe feel gratified at the advancement you have made here. You have an appropriate building where you can serve God. And while we may feel gratified with this, we want to be sure that everything in regard to ourselves is right with God. When I was in America the condition of things in Christiania and in other churches here in Europe was presented before me, and I was shown that, while our brethren here had accepted the truth, yet there was to be a continual advancement on their part before they would be prepared for the work that God would do through them; that we have a most solemn message to proclaim to the world, which is to elevate the standard of God’s law before the world which is making it void; and that here was here in Christiania a defect in the church in this respect. The Sabbath was not regarded by the people with that sacredness that it is presented to us in the Bible. While they held the Sabbath so loosely, it was impossible for God to let His blessing rest upon the church. 

There has been too much done in the line of bringing the Sabbath down to man’s convenience rather than to bring the Sabbath up, as it is presented in the Word of God.The word spoken to me by the angel of God was to observe and see that while worship was going on in the house of God on the Sabbath, and the Sabbath was being nominally observed by the people here; while the prayers were being offered to God for His blessing to rest upon the people, and while the minister was talking to the people, there was heard the sound of the hammer and anvil and chisel, and various sounds. Said the angel, “This is an offense to God. How can God regard Himself as honored by a people who profess to worship Him, and let His blessing rest upon the people, while these things are going on?” Well, now, I could not at the time understand what this meant; but since I have come right here upon the premises, I understand it. Here is a blacksmith right here upon the premises who carries his work on right while worship is going on here on the Sabbath day. And while these meetings have been going on I have heard the same sounds that the angel caused me to hear over in America. I have heard the sound of chisel and hammer while we have been worshiping God. And the angel said to me that God could not let His blessing rest upon a people who have so little respect for His Word. Again I was led into different places, and I saw accounts that were being settled up and business that was being done upon the Sabbath day because it was convenient for the people.

Then I was pointed back and was shown that had the truth been held in years past in the manner that it has been held here, we would not have been one-fiftieth part as far advanced as we are today. I was referred to the case of Daniel, how he stood forth for the honor of God whatever might be the result. Had many of our brethren here been placed in a similar condition as was Daniel, they would not have stood firm to principle as he did, but they would have lowered the standard to meet the condition of the people. I was shown that should you, with your present ideas and views, be brought to the test here, you would not take your position so as to connect yourselves with the work of God. Now the requirement that was presented to me was that there should be just as strict integrity on the part of you here as there was on the part of Daniel." HOW TO KEEP THE SABBATH DAY

 

The only way to answer this question is to read God's own words.... and He says this:

 is... What is God's definition of work?


 

"Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.  Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:  But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God:  in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:  For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day:  wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it." -Exodus 20:8-11 (KJV), The Fourth Commandment [emphasis added]

 

A quick review here:  God starts His commandment by saying that we must remember the Sabbath day to even be able to keep it holy (we can't stress this enough).  Then God tells us that the Sabbath day is the seventh day, which is Saturday (please refer to the seventh day of the week page if you have not already read this.)  So, once we know all this, then God tells us how to keep the Sabbath day holy.  God simply says that we are to not do any work on the Sabbath day (Saturday).  Also, most interpret the not causing our "son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates" part of the commandment to mean that we are to not directly cause anyone else to do work on this day either.  This commandment is so simple, yet, it is a huge transition for someone who has spent their life shopping/working on Saturday. See, if we shop, we are causing others to work- which would make us hypocrites if we believe that we should keep the Sabbath.  Therefore, we should try to complete any purchases that we may need for the Sabbath before sundown on Friday (a Biblical day is sundown to sundown, please refer to the seventh day of the weekpage).  For further Biblical evidence, Nehemiah 13:15-22 clearly states that we are not to buy or sell goods on the Sabbath.

 

The inevitable question

 

The most obvious definition of work is "employment for pay," so we will explore this topic first.  We will also go over a few other things you may have questions about- volunteer work, cooking, and cleaning.

 

Employment for Pay

This may be hard for many to hear, but there are very few circumstances in which it is Biblically acceptable for a Christian to continue in their usual line or work on Saturday.  Exceptions may include jobs that are necessary for human survival and cannot be prepared for in advance, such as, but not limited to, emergency medical personnel.  However, some may argue that under ideal circumstances, these types of needs would be met by volunteer service... which brings us to our next topic...

 

Volunteer Work

Jesus healed and helped on the Sabbath day, so volunteer work on the Sabbath is certainly permitted and even encouraged by the Jesus.  Just make sure that the volunteer work lines up with the Biblical principles of Sabbath keeping...  For example, a Sabbath-keeper may not want to volunteer on the Sabbath at a place that is causing others to work for pay that day, or a place that is buying and selling merchandise.  Ultimately, any volunteer work done on the Sabbath should be to further God's kingdom.  Pray about any volunteer work that you have questions about and refer to the Sabbath commandment (Exodus 20:8-11).

 

Cooking

God wants us to get as much rest as possible on the Sabbath day, so He asks us to do things like cook or prepare our meals in advance so we don't have to worry about it on the Sabbath.  We can see from the following Biblical passage that this is so. This passage is referring to the gathering of the manna that rained down from heaven from God to feed the children of Israel when they were in the wilderness:

 

"And it came to pass, that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for one man: and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses.  And he said unto them, This is that which the LORD hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the LORD:  bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.  And they laid it up till the morning, as Moses bade:  and it did not stink, neither was there any worm therein.  And Moses said, Eat that to day; for to day is a sabbath unto the LORD:  to day ye shall not find it in the field.  Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the sabbath, in it there shall be none.  And it came to pass, that there went out some of the people on the seventh day for to gather, and they found none.  And the LORD said unto Moses, How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws?  See, for that the LORD hath given you the sabbath, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days..." -Exodus 16:22-29

 

This passage should be taken in context with Jesus' words about picking grain on the Sabbath. (Matthew 12:1-14; Mark 2:23-28; Mark 3:1-6; Luke 6:1-11; Luke 13:10-17; Luke 14:1-6; John 5:1-15)  The Pharisees scolded Jesus when he and his disciples picked a few grains of wheat or barley to snack on.  Jesus corrected them and quoted scripture showing that His acts were in harmony with God's Sabbath commandment.  We are certainly allowed to snack on the Sabbath, and picking a snack out of a field (or from our pantry for that matter) is not labor-intensive.  Jesus was teaching us that we should be careful to not add unnecessary, man-made obligations to the Sabbath commandment like the Pharisees did. (for more info on this passage, please refer to the What did Jesus do? page)  Therefore, take both of these passages to heart when considering how to prepare for the Sabbath.  In short, any labor-intensive meal preparation should be done ahead of time, but don't be afraid to lift a finger on the Sabbath.

 

Cleaning

The Bible does not specifically talk about cleaning on the Sabbath day, however, most people would agree that cleaning is usually not considered restful.  Since the commandment says that we are to rest on the Sabbath day, it's a good idea to try to do our cleaning ahead of time, so that when the Sabbath comes, we can truly rest.  Let us keep in mind that the Sabbath commandment isn't meant to be legalistic... it was made for us, we were not made for it (Mark 2:27).  So, for example, if we spill milk on the floor, it's okay to clean it up...

 

There are many other questions about Sabbath keeping that one may have or areas that may appear grey (are not specifically covered in the Bible).  For these questions, refer to the general principles of Sabbath keeping that the Bible lays out and pray for guidance and understanding in the area of concern.  The Holy Spirit will guide you towards the right decision.

 

God gave us the Sabbath commandment because He loves us.  He knew that if He didn't, we would work ourselves into the ground and forget about Him (which would both result in unhappiness for us).  Therefore, these guidelines are not meant to be burdens.  On the contrary, the Sabbath commandment was only made to help us.  It may seem like a huge sacrifice to change your whole life around to keep the Sabbath day holy, but really, it is not a sacrifice at all...  the Sabbath is actually a magnificent blessing that God is holding out for you, just waiting for you to take.

 

So, what can a Christian do on Sabbath days?

 

Sabbath days should, first and foremost, be days of resting.  Enjoy one day a week free from work, created just for you by God.  Most Sabbath-keepers attend church services on Sabbath because this was the custom of Jesus and His followers in the Bible (Luke 4:16, Mark 6:2, Luke 6:6, Luke 13:10-11, Acts 13:13-15; 42, Acts 13:27.)  Try to focus on God and His creation during Sabbath days... Sabbath days began, after all, with God resting after creating the heavens and the earth.  Many people enjoy spending time in nature on Sabbath days- taking a walk or hike, or having a picnic.  If it is cold outside, curl up on your couch with a blanket and read the Bible... or watch a nature film and marvel at God's creation.  Visit with a lonely friend or loved one... pray for those in need... invite others over for lunch and fellowship with them.  These are just a few examples of things Sabbath-keepers do on Sabbath days.How to keep the Sabbath day holy.

This commandment should be so easy to keep, but in fact it can also be one of the hardest. For example, on Sunday family or friends visit and all you can think of is all the work you'll have in the kitchen and how nice it would be just to take everyone out to dinner.

But there are solutions to trying to keep the Sabbath holy. Here are some of the things we can do on Sundays:- Rest from our labors.

- Don't buy or sell.
- Refrain from work on the Sabbath, the 7th day, unless absolutely necessary.
- Do good deeds, such as giving blessings or feeding the missionaries. Feeding the missionaries always brings the spirit of the Lord with them into our home, helping us keep the Sabbath more fully.
- Prepare food simply.
- Give Christ donations. (Insomuch as ye have done it unto the least of these, ye have done it unto me.
- Worship, pray and study the scriptures. When praying, we can pray to keep the Sabbath more holy. This can be the best way to get help and understanding on this great commandment.
- Attend Church if you can find one that keeps all 10 commandments or home meetings.
- Fulfill Christ's callings. In speaking of callings in Jesus, it doesn't matter if it's teaching the 3-year-olds in Primary or the 13-year-olds in Sabbath School. Service lets the Lord know you love Him and you are trying to obey His commandments.

There are ways to accomplish these things.
- Prepare food on Friday.
- Try to do all work on Friday. To me, Friday is the day to prepare for the Sabbath.

How we do it:

Positive things

The Sabbath day is important to our Father in Heaven and to us as people. When I first joined the Church in 1988, it seemed like keeping the Sabbath holy entailed a list of don'ts. I was looking at it the wrong way. I have since looked at it differently - what can I do on the Sabbath? The list is long and keeps me busy! I can do the following:

- I can teach Sabbath School. I have a calling to teach the 14- and 15-year-olds. I love it!
- I can visit friends who may be in the hospital.
- I can visit a friend who may be lonely.
- I can read my lessons.
- I can read my scriptures.
- I can write letters to family or friends.
- I can write in my journal.
- I can work on family history records.
- I can go to firesides.
- I can go to choir practice.
- I can play hymns on my keyboard.

Doing positive things on the Sabbath helps my spirit get recharged for the rest of the week.

Sabbath dinner

We have the children set our best china, crystal and silverware for dinner every Sabbath. This accomplishes three things. First, our children know that Sabbath is special from other days because the china is set. Second, our dinner time is quiet, and we are able to discuss our Church lessons or family matters around the table. Third, it gives us an opportunity to teach children etiquette and table manners. 

Frame of mind

It seems that no matter what the reason, Sabbath is still Sabbath. One of the little tricks I have developed on Sabbath is to make sure that I spend some of the day in meditation or conversation about the gospel. I have found that some of the best missionary opportunities have occurred on the Sabbath. It also helps to develop a "Sabbath frame of mind."

Many make time to study the scriptures or catch up on journals while on breaks. 

Less stress

On Sabbaths, we enjoy hymns, journal writing, scripture study, good books, family council, visiting the lonely, and quiet games with the small children. At the same time, it has been most beneficial to avoid all worldly media. That has really made a big difference in the spirituality of the day.

Preparing meals and desserts, and cleaning on Friday creates a peaceful atmosphere with less stress the following day.

'Sabbath box'

I just taught a lesson on keeping the Sabbath day holy to my class and found that the message was much clearer when I focused on things we can do on Sabbaths and not just what we can't. I briefly discussed the "don'ts," but then listed the "dos" on the board. They included the basics, like studying the scriptures and visiting the sick, but also an idea my mother used with me when I was small called a "Sabbath box." It included special books and art supplies that I could use only on Sabbath. My class really liked the idea. 

Simple rule

I received some of the best advice ever on "keeping the Sabbath day holy."

Among the great counsel read from the Bible that evening was the counsel to stay in our Sabbath clothes for the entire Sabbath day. I went home and implemented the counsel. I won't say my children didn't grumble a little bit at first, but the blessings that simple rule has brought into our home are phenomenal.

There are no more questions about proper Sabbath activities. If you can't do it in your Sabbath best, you can't do it. The manner of your dress will affect the manner of your activity. Our home is now more reverent on Sabbath, thus creating an atmosphere that is more conducive to having the Spirit with us.

In addition, I allow only Church music on Sabbath. Starting the Sabbath off with the sweet sounds of the Tabernacle Choir invites the Spirit. - Debbie Harker, Pasco, Wash.

Conscience is guide

Your conscience will guide you. If you have to ask, "Is this all right to do on the Sabbath," the answer is usually "no." Ask the Lord to help you. You will know within yourself whether your actions are appropriate.

1 Attend Church/home church meetings; pray, study scriptures.
2 Read Bible; write in journal.
3 Rest from your labors; do good deeds, serve others.
4 Stay in your "Sabbath best"; it affects your activity, attitude.

Let me tell you my mind in one short sentence: “You can’t hold to the Lunar Sabbath, and still be a believer in the Spirit of Prophecy at the same time”. I will clarify this point beyond any shadow of doubt, to all involved. If you say I have the Bible, then, realize that the angel quoted from it to specify when a day starts. To insist on keeping the feast days will eventually lead to giving up the Sabbath of the Lord, which is actually happening with you now.

The article you sent in the attachment is not accurate. To suggest that Ellen White supports the Lunar Sabbath is twisting her writings. In addition to what I’ll share below on what she said concerning the preparation time for commencing the Sabbath, Notice also the following quote: 

“We have the truth. We know it. Praise the Lord. I saw yesterday our work was not to the shepherds who have rejected the former messages, but to the honest deceived who are led astray. I saw the false shepherds would soon be fed with judgment. Let the truth come out everywhere we go, the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord our God. Cheer up. There are better days coming”.--Letter 18, 1850, p. 1. (To Brother and Sister Hastings, January 11, 1850.)  {5MR 91.1}  

Which day was she referring to as the Sabbath in 1850?

“So we are to hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end. Words of power have been sent by God and by Christ to this people, bringing them out from the world, point by point, into the clear light of present truth. With lips touched with holy fire, God's servants have proclaimed the message. The divine utterance has set its seal to the genuineness of the truth proclaimed”. {RH, March 3, 1904 par. 16}.   

  After the 1848 Sabbath meetings, Sr White said they had the truth and knew it. Furthermore,we are told that the brethren studied the Scriptures and then the Spirit of God testified of the truth through Sr White.  Did the Spirit not know they had the wrong day?


  What Sabbath truth was proclaimed from 1844 till 1904? It is really disturbing when people insist that Ellen White supports the lunar Sabbath theory, when she does not! We need to cling to Jesus as He is the truth, and He has the truth, and the truth was revealed to us in the beginning through the testimony of the Spirit.


Already the document you attached, throws some doubt on the SOP by saying: “It is true that there are some references in her writings to “Friday and Sabbath”, but such terminology cannot be found in scripture”.  You see why I said in a nut shell that you have to accept either the lunar theory, or the SOP? But you can’t be a believer in both at the same time. Furthermore, the angel quoted the Bible to direct her to when the Sabbath should start, and that is at sunset, not at sunrise as you practice.


Let me remind you of what I shared earlier with you from the pen of inspiration:

 “The last rays of merciful light, the last message of mercy to be given to the world, is a revelation of His (God) character of love “COL 415   {so, it is not a theory of a lunar calendar}...This is the last message to be given to the world. God's character is to be demonstrated before the world, and that t is the last message for humanity (Isa. 60: 1-3) The Spirit of prophecy says the darkness that covers the world, the real darkness, is a misunderstanding of God's character of love. . That is the message in its essence. We can argue back and forth on new theories, that are brought forth at this fifth hour of the world's history, just before the coming of our Lord, to only divert out attention from the real issue which is proclaiming the last message of mercy to be given to the world, the revelation of the character of God, and this Character is manifested and shown in the gift of His begotten Son.

In the course of our earlier correspondence on this issue of the lunar, when I quoted to you what the angel told Ellen White, you said: “The angle told Sister While that she will not understand what even is and when it is."  My answer was:

The angel did not say she will not understand what even is and when it is (as if it is left for future study or future generation to discover what it means). Here is what the angel told her:

 Said the angel: "Take the Word of God,   read it, understand, and ye cannot err. Read carefully, and ye shall there find what even is and when it is."  {1BIO 324.3}

 And indeed they read and, understood what even is and when it is. As a result she and Joseph Bates changed from the 6 O'clock, to sunset, and were all unified on the same conclusion JN Andrews came up with, from his 3 week study research, that the day starts at sunset. You are making the angel say what he did not say. Similar to question 32 on your website on “when does the day begin”, of making Job 17: 8-14, say what he did not say or even mean. And  also to question 39 of John 11: 9 of interpreting Jesus’ words in what He did not mean to say at all.. Kindly refer to these two examples and read my comments there.

And if the angel told her she will not understand. How come they understood and practiced what they understood and as a result, the whole body of believers were united again, after they almost were divided on the issue of when the Sabbath starts. If they were praying for understanding, would the angel come and then leave them more troubled, agitated, and perplexed? Is this what happened when Daniel in chapter 8 prayed for understanding, then 3 weeks later the angel came to him in chapter 9. Did the angel leave him without giving him the full understanding of what he asked for? Amazing that the angel in both cases (with Ellen White, and with Daniel), used the words, “read, and understand"!!!!!!

 The Creator would not have intervened and shown Ellen White the truth, and a few years later change the truth completely. I cannot believe God would allow us as a people to have the wrong day, and not make it clear to us. Furthermore, the angel told Sr White that Sabbath began at sunset and not at 6.00 pm as they thought.   This would be ridiculous if they had the wrong day, for the angel who corrected the time, would have corrected the day also if they had it wrong!. The angel assured Mrs. White that she would not err in the matter, and Mrs. White saw that it was in fact from "even unto even". So who are we to say that these words are not true, and insist to listen to the words of men that contradict these words?

Regarding the quote from Ellen White on what the angel said, it is really very simple. The context makes it clear. Also the article by James White who was present at the time, tells us that one of the things God showed her was that it was WRONG to start Sabbath at sunrise (which you practice now).

The angel was not referring to a new understanding of 'even' but that later they will understand why they had to keep it at a wrong time for so long, so they can study it themselves, which J N Andrews did later, when commissioned by James White, and confirmed from the Bible what the angel told her that the Sabbath is kept from even unto even, quoting Leviticus 23: 32: “It shall be unto you a Sabbath of rest, and ye shall afflict your souls: in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye celebrate your Sabbath." Leviticus 23:32

Here when the Creator is telling us that our Sabbath is to be from even unto even, who are we to say no, and put our own private interpretation that this verse in Leviticus applies only to the day atonement?

 God established through Andrews the truth through Bible study and confirmed it through Ellen White via revelation so as to set a seal on the Sabbath truth of even to even. This is what is meant by the next statement of the angel to her, in the same reference but two paragraphs under the first. Here are the two statements together:

 1 - I saw that it is even so: "From even unto even, shall ye celebrate your Sabbath." Said the angel: "Take the Word of God, read it, understand, and ye cannot err. Read carefully, and ye shall there find what even is and when it is."  {1BIO 324.3}

  2 -   I asked the angel if the frown of God had been upon His People for commencing the Sabbath as they had. I was directed back to the first rise of the Sabbath, and followed the people of God up to this time, but did not see that the Lord was displeased, or frowned upon them.  {1BIO 324.4}

        I inquired why it had been thus, that at this late day we must change the time of commencing the Sabbath. (Notice that she was keeping it at 6 o clock PM). Said the angel:"Ye shall understand, but not yet, not yet." ..Said the angel: "If light come, and that light is set aside or rejected, then comes condemnation and the frown of God; but before the light comes there is no sin, for there is no light for them to reject."  {1BIO 324.5}

In other words, the angel told her there was no condemnation on them keeping the Sabbath at 6 o'clock, since they didn't have light on the issue.

Then he told her" ye shall understand, but not yet”, as to why at this late day they must change the time of commencing the Sabbath. This was her inquiry. But after they studied and J N Andrews came up with the three weeks study, and they all agreed on the conclusion to keep it at sunset, it would have been counted sin if they did not follow the light from that point on.  They never after that kept the Sabbath on any other time except at sunset .The context is clear, but people will choose to believe whatever they want.

Here is the same:” Ellen White reasoned that the six o'clock time had been a matter of practice for nearly a decade. The Sabbath so kept had been a great blessing to her, and the angel had said nothing about its being in error. Must a change be made now? Thus matters stood through the rest of the Sabbath and through Sunday as the members met in conference, but this was a rather touchy point of division that was bound to widen as time went on. Then the God of heaven stepped in. Of what took place, Ellen White wrote:

         November 20, 1855, while in prayer, the Spirit of the Lord came suddenly and powerfully upon me, and I was taken off in vision.--1T, p. 113.  {1BIO 324.1}

     Her attention was called to many points, among them the time to commence the Sabbath. She discussed the matter with the angel. This conversation is very enlightening:  {1BIO 324.2}

Here is the same account from the pen of the prophetess’ husband, James White who said:” Mrs. White has in two visions been shown something in regard to the time of the commencement of the Sabbath. The first was as early as 1847, at Topsham, Me. In the vision she was shown that to commence the Sabbath at sunrise was wrong. She then heard an angel repeat these words, "From even unto even shall ye celebrate your Sabbaths… Mrs. W. had a vision, one item of which was that sunset time was correct. This settled the matter with Bro. Bates and others, and general harmony has since prevailed among us upon this point” (Time to Commence the Sabbath by James White, RH, Feb. 25, 1868).

 (I have the message of James white, plus the research of J N Andrews for you or anyone else to ask for.)

 (So it was not at 6 o'clock, nor at sunrise, my dear Sameh)

And what about the following quotes (All highlights are mine) proving that Sabbath is the day called Saturday, and that it is preceded with Friday the preparation day?

God, in several statements of the Testimonies, uses the word “Friday” when telling us to prepare for the “Sabbath.” Ellen White writes, “Friday is the day of preparation.” (CG 528-529). “Fridayis to be the special preparation day.” (CCh 263). And, in fact, “employers should give their workers the hours from Friday noon until the beginning of the Sabbath.”

And so far is this from being a modern innovation that “The Lord told [the Israelites that were cooking manna] that this work must be done on Friday, the preparation day.” (CCh 263). They were “obliged to gather every Friday a double portion of manna in preparation for the Sabbath.” (PP 297). On a lunar calendar Friday would only rarely be the day to prepare for the Sabbath. { So, my dear, if you claim that the word Sabbath does not mean Saturday, then to be on the safe side according to the above command, the day that follows Friday would have to be the Sabbath of the Lord. Is this fair enough? And would it solve the issue for you?}

And again:” On Friday let the preparation for the Sabbath be completed. See that all the clothing is in readiness, and that all the cooking is done. Let the boots be blacked, and the baths be taken. It is possible to do this. If you make it a rule, you can do it. The Sabbath is not to be given to the repairing of garments, to the cooking of food, to pleasure seeking, or to any other worldly employment. Before the setting of the sun{when the day starts} let all secular work be laid aside, and all secular papers be put out of sight. Parents, explain your work and its purpose to your children, and let them share in your preparation to keep the Sabbath according to the commandment”.  {CG 528.2}.

 ( Is this not enough evidence, dear , beloved Sameh, that the day starts at sunset, and that Friday is the preparation day FOR Sabbath which is Saturday????)

And in like manner, Ellen White identifies the day of Christ’s burial as “Friday.” (Ctr. 295.) This makes the Sabbath of Christ’s day in the grave a Saturday. “In the afternoon of the first day of the week, two of the disciples, restless and unhappy, decided to return to their home in Emmaus, a village about eight miles from Jerusalem. . . . ‘{CTr 295.3} “But we trusted that it had been He which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, today is the third day since these things were done” (Acts 24: 21). (So it was not Wednesday, as the document you sent claims)

“When the Sabbath is thus remembered, the temporal will not be allowed to encroach upon the spiritual. No duty pertaining to the six working days will be left for the Sabbath. During the week our energies will not be so exhausted in temporal labor that on the day when the Lord rested and was refreshed {Notice, this is the Sabbath of creation. And it is the same as that of crucifixion, as pointed above), we shall be too weary to engage in His service. {CCh 262.5}

“We should jealously guard the edges of the Sabbath  Remember that every moment is consecrated, holy time. Whenever it is possible, employers should give their workers the hours from Friday noon until the beginning of the Sabbath {Another proof that the Sabbath starts at sunset}. Give them time for preparation that they may welcome the Lord's Day with quietness of mind. By such a course you will suffer no loss even in temporal things. {CCh 263.3}

As you can see how she often spoke about keeping the Sabbath holy – did she not know it was the wrong day?

We are told that in the end some pastors and evangelists are going to tell church members to keep Sunday in churches and large outdoor meetings.  This will be a big end time deception for church members when the Sunday law is being formed, and many will change through fear and through being convinced the day is wrong.

We are also told through the Bible and the spirit of prophecy, that Satan is going to impersonate Christ at the end and tell everyone to keep Sunday, and that the day had been changed. So how could this be true, and why would Satan tire himself if we are already keeping the wrong day. Are you cleverer than him?????? It seems we don’t have to wait until the devil impersonates Christ to be distracted into keeping another day; it is already here in a subtle, convincing, overpowering way!! No wonder that only a remnant will be left, and they will be racked with huge problems like this lunar theory, and others.

Ellen White was only supporting and confirming what the Bible said concerning when Christ was crucified, and when the Sabbath starts. Here are a few examples:

Luke 4: 40; Mark 1: 32; Mat. 8: 16: “Now when the sun was setting, they brought the sick to Him for healing”. (Why did they have to wait until the setting of the sun?)

Mat. 27: 57:” When the even was come Joseph went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus”.(Why did he have to wait until even came?)

Mark 15: 42: “And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is the day before the Sabbath, Joseph went to Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus

Luke 23: 56 “And that day was the preparation, and the Sabbath drew on”

John 19: 31:”…That the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the Sabbath day, they broke their legs… ( it was Friday evening)

John 19: 42:” There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews’ preparation day, for the sepulchre was nigh at hand”.

If you think that the Lunar Sabbath was not revealed to Ellen White, and that it is a new light, then remember that any new light would never contradict old revealed light. And if not revealing the Lunar to her” does not in any way dent her divine credentials”, then let us look on what was revealed to her.

The rejection of 1888 was due to kingly power on the part of the leaders, not fear to acknowledge the Lunar Sabbath as your document claims. It had nothing to do with calendars or such things. The Luni-Solar calendar is used to reckon the time of the feasts, and thus Oct. 22, 1844 was calculated because it was the feast of Atonement but this has nothing to do with the seventh-day Sabbath. They are two different things. The whole article is summarized in the end in this question: '“Since the luni-solar calendar was used for determining Adventism’s most distinctive doctrine – October 22, 1844 – why are we not using the same calendar for determining the weekly Sabbath?” But these are two different things, and if you want to apply the Lunar on the Sabbath of the Lord, saying it is also a feast, then the recommendation is to read the attached document: ” Feast days”, to know the difference.

There is a problem in the document you attached. It immediately suggests that if the Day of Atonement was based on the Karaite calendar, then we have the 7th day Sabbath wrong. But where is the connection, when even the very Karaite Jews themselves keep the same 7th day Sabbath we keep (Saturday!).  Any Karaite Hakham would confirm this fact, and any encyclopedia article will show that they keep the same day as the Jews when it comes to the Sabbath. Though their calendar and reckoning was used to calculate 1844, they deny the lunacy of calculating the seventh-day Sabbath based on the lunar calendar, for that would immediately disqualify it from being the 7th day Sabbath! I think the article is flawed in that aspect. It might convince those who don’t study the facts, but anyone who examines the issue for himself will quickly see the inconsistency. 

 The weekly Sabbath did not wander through the week like the feast days and the ceremonial Sabbaths.  The new moon was to begin the new month and had nothing to do with the Sabbath. The very fact that it's called 7th day means that it is calculated by the cycle of days from creation, and is not based on any calendar! ( If you resort to the argument that the Sabbath was also a feast and should be measured by the Lunar like the other feasts, then, again, I would recommend studying the attachment:” feast days, ”to see the difference between the 7th day Sabbath of creation, and the feasts).

And inspiration clearly identifies the origin of the “week.”  “Like the Sabbath, the week originated at creation, and it has been preserved and brought down to us through Bible history. God himself measured off the first week as a sample for successive weeks to the close of time. Like every other, it consisted of seven literal days. Six days were employed in the work of creation; upon the seventh, God rested, and he then blessed this day, and set it apart as a day of rest for man.” (CE 190)

“…Of each successive day of creation, the sacred record declares that it consisted of theevening and the morning, like all other days that followed” (PP 111, 112).

This is what Sylvester Bliss in your attached document, admitted in his book,” Analysis of sacred chronology” The week is another primeval measure, is not a natural measure of time… It was originated by divine appointment… So it is the sole unit of time measurement that is not tied to anything in nature”.

  Not Any Day in Seven

I saw the quoted passages that say we should study new light, and this is fine, my dear.   However, when Kellogg wanted to study the doctrine of God, Sr White said no study should be done on it.   His findings were to be rejected outright.    It would be the same for the Sabbath, which is a main pillar of truth that cannot be changed. Here, again, is the inspired admonition:

“Through all these centuries the truth of God has remained the same. That which was truth in the beginning is truth now. Although new and important truths appropriate for succeeding generations have been opened to the understanding, the present revealings do not contradict those of the past. Every new truth understood only makes more significant the old.”  {E. G. White, Review and Herald, March 2, 1886 par. 6}

God speaks to the human family in language they can comprehend. He does not leave the matter so indefinite that human beings can handle it according to their theories. When the Lord declares that He made the world in six days and rested on the seventh day, He means the day of twenty-four hours, which He has marked “from even unto even”. 

     God would not announce the death sentence for a disregard of the Sabbath unless He had presented before men a clear understanding of the Sabbath. After He had created our world and man, He looked upon the work that He had done, and pronounced it very good. And when the foundation of the earth was laid, the foundation of the Sabbath was laid also. "When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy," God saw that the Sabbath was essential for man, even in Paradise. In giving the Sabbath, God considered man's spiritual and physical health.  This was 2500 years before any feasts. The Sabbath is in the Ten Commandments. These Commandments are a transcript of God’s character; they describe what God is like. Just as God does not change, His law describing His character does not change. In order to change the law you have to change God, and that can never be done (Malachi 3:6; Psalm 89:34). 

The Sabbath existed before sin entered this world. It was instituted on the seventh day of the creation week. The reason given for man to rest on that day is that God rested from His work on that day (Exodus 20:8-11). The Sabbath rests on a higher platform than all the other ceremonies given to man. Every other ceremony is dependent upon sin to exist. If sin had not entered, there would never have been an earthly sanctuary to deal with that problem, nor would there have been a Passover, or any of the other feast days. Without sin they have no reason to exist. The Sabbath is independent of sin; it existed before sin started on this earth, and will continue after it is finished (Isaiah 66:22, 23), after this world is dissolved (2 Peter 3:10-13) when God makes a new earth to replace it. The Sabbath started in Eden before sin, and the feasts came 2,500 years later. The Sabbath is not equal to the annual feasts, but holds a more exalted position, and is rightly listed before the ceremonies were established.

  What are we to understand by the word “day “in the first chapter of Genesis?  I answer that it is used with two significations.  First, it is used by God in giving name to the light, as distinguished from the darkness which was called night.  In other words it is applied to that part of the 24 hours which is light.  Second, it is used in naming the seventh part of the week, or the entire period of 24 hours.  Verse 5 presents an instance in which it is used in each of these senses.  "And God called the light day, and the darkness he called night: and the evening and the morning were the first day."  It is with the second definition, or use of the word day, that we are interested.

   But here some will meet us with the denial that the word day is used for a period of 24 hours, or in other words, that the night is ever in the Scriptures included in the day.  It is proper that that point should be briefly noticed.  It is said in Ex.20: 11, that "in six days the Lord made heaven and earth."  This establishes the fact that the six days began with the act of creation: or, to use a different expression, the first day of the week began with God's act of forming heaven and earth.  Now it was profound darkness until after the Spirit of God had moved upon the waters.  The next act of the Lord was the creation of light.  Then having divided the light from the darkness he designates the one as day, and the other as night.  This is a demonstration that night was the first division of the first day, and consequently, if the divine order were followed, the first division of all subsequent days.  That the force of this argument appears in the first five verses of Genesis. so when the Creator created the day as an evening and morning, who are we to say that the seventh day is only the period of day light?

Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, 
after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ." Colossians 2:8




How should we keep the Sabbath?


Those who think that since we are in Yahushua, everyday is the Sabbath would think twice if they knew that if this were the case, then they would never be permitted to work or do anything having to do with our own pleasures on the Sabbath. There are many blessings attached to keeping the Sabbath day holy. So lets find out what it means to keep this day Holy:

Deut 5:13 (NKJV) Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14 but the seventh day [is] the Sabbath of Yahweh your Elohim. [In] [it] you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your ox, nor your donkey, nor any of your cattle, nor your stranger who [is] within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you.

So not only are we to rest, but those who work for us are to rest also. If we own a business, it is not acceptable to have all the employees working while we enjoy a restful Sabbath day. This commandment also includes anyone who we temporarily hire to work for us. For instance, when we go to restaurants we are hiring the cook and the waiter and the person who rings up the bill as a servant to work for us. Also anytime we purchase anything on the Sabbath such as groceries and other merchandise we are hiring others to stock the shelves, clean up and ring up the bill for us because we are paying for their service when we purchase the items. Nehemiah rebukes buying and selling quite sharply in this scripture:

Nehe 13:15 (NKJV) In those days I saw [people] in Judah treading wine presses on the Sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and loading donkeys with wine, grapes, figs, and all [kinds] [of] burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. And I warned [them] about the day on which they were selling provisions. 16 Men of Tyre dwelt there also, who brought in fish and all kinds of goods, and sold [them] on the Sabbath to the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem. 17 Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said to them, "What evil thing [is] this that you do, by which you profane the Sabbath day? 18 "Did not your fathers do thus, and did not our Elohim bring all this disaster on us and on this city? Yet you bring added wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath."

So buying and selling is clearly forbidden on the Sabbath. Going to restaurants and shopping malls and grocery stores is no way to keep the Sabbath holy. The Sabbath is a day of rest and prayer and worship. Not a day for doing our own pleasures:

Isai 58:13 "If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, [From] doing your pleasure on My holy day, And call the Sabbath a delight, The holy [day] of Yahweh honorable, And shall honor Him, not doing your own ways, Nor finding your own pleasure, Nor speaking [your] [own] words, 14 Then you shall delight yourself in Yahweh; And I will cause you to ride on the high hills of the earth, And feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father. The mouth of Yahweh has spoken."

So keeping the Sabbath day holy not only means that we aren't to buy or sell, but also means that we are to refrain from our own pleasures such as sporting events, television, movies, etc. Also we are not even to speak our own words! Even our speech should be about Yahweh and His word. I assure you, if we keep the Sabbath day in this manner it will be much easier keeping Yahweh's commandments because we have one day each week to refresh ourselves spiritually. It is a day that we can look forward to during the week that we can fully refresh ourselves both physically and spiritually. Yahweh never made our bodies to withstand constant labor day after day. It is no wonder that so many people we meet are so tired all of the time. And it is no wonder that people often fall away

Cooking and Preparation day.

When Yahweh brought the children of Israel out of Egypt, he re-instituted the Sabbath day. No doubt that the Egyptians expected them to work seven days a week. Here is Moses telling the children of Israel what they should do in preparation for the Sabbath:

Exod 16:23 (NKJV) Then he said to them, "This [is] [what] Yahweh has said: `Tomorrow [is] a Sabbath rest, a holy Sabbath to Yahweh. Bake what you will bake [today], and boil what you will boil; and lay up for yourselves all that remains, to be kept until morning.' "

On preparation day, we should prepare our food that will be eaten on the Sabbath so that we will not have to cook or prepare it on the Sabbath. There are many variations of how to do this which will not be discussed in this study. I encourage all who want to know more to either email me or study it out for themselves.

What is permitted on the Sabbath?

Now there are some things that are always okay to do on the Sabbath that the Scribes and Pharisees in Yahushua's day would think forbidden:

John 5:10 (NKJV) The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, "It is the Sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry [your] bed."

Luke 13:14 (NKJV) But the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because Yahushua had healed on the Sabbath; and he said to the crowd, "There are six days on which men ought to work; therefore come and be healed on them, and not on the Sabbath day."

Luke 6:7 (NKJV) So the scribes and Pharisees watched Him closely, whether He would heal on the Sabbath, that they might find an accusation against Him.

Luke 6:1 (NKJV) Now it happened on the second Sabbath after the first that He went through the grainfields. And His disciples plucked the heads of grain and ate [them], rubbing [them] in [their] hands. 2 And some of the Pharisees said to them, "Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?"

Note that in the above verses that the issue was not whether or not to keep the Sabbath but rather how the Sabbath should be kept! Let's look at Yahushua's response to these accusations:

Healing on the Sabbath:

Luke 13:15 (NKJV) The Master then answered him and said, "Hypocrite! Does not each one of you on the Sabbath loose his ox or donkey from the stall, and lead [it] away to water it? 16 "So ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound--think of it--for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath?"

Luke 14:5 (NKJV) Then He answered them, saying, "Which of you, having a donkey or an ox that has fallen into a pit, will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?" 6 And they could not answer Him regarding these things.

John 5:16 (NKJV) For this reason the Jews persecuted Yahushua, and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath. 17 But Yahushua answered them, "My Father has been working until now, and I have been working."

Mark 2:27 (NKJV) And He said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.

John 7:22 (NKJV) "Moses therefore gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. 23 "If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath, so that the law of Moses should not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath?

Also take into consideration that the Levites sacrificed animals on the Sabbath day and therefore had to work. This is Yahushua's answer to them when the disciples began to pluck grain to eat on the Sabbath:

Matt 12:3 (NKJV) But He said to them, "Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: 4 "how he entered the house of Yahweh and ate the showbread which was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests ? 5 "Or have you not read in the law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath , and are blameless? 6 "Yet I say to you that in this place there is [One] greater than the temple. 7 "But if you had known what [this] means, `I desire mercy and not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the guiltless

Yahweh expects us to keep the Sabbath day holy. But it is always ok to do good on the Sabbath day and clearly Yahushua and the disciples did not have time to prepare for the Sabbath because they were doing Yahweh's work. So if we have to do a little work on the Sabbath or cause another to do a little work on the Sabbath for Yahweh's purpose then this is not breaking the Sabbath. Of course one could take this to the extreme as well and say that it is impossible for them to refrain from going to work on the Sabbath or they would be fired and then not have any food. This is ridiculous. Yahweh will provide for us. We needn't be concerned about our food if we are obeying His Sabbath.

So, in summary we can see that Yahweh wants us to keep His Sabbath Holy by not working, buying, selling, causing others to work for us, speaking idle or vain words or doing our own pleasures on the Sabbath. There are only exceptions if we are fulfilling Yahweh's purpose for something. And this I leave to one's own heart for only Yahweh knows our heart. To add a bunch of laws to try and apply to specific situations is legalism. And this is what the scribes and Pharisees were practicing. Yahushua clearly taught against that.

101 Things to Do on Sabbath:

1. Children and adults could read their Church magazines from cover to cover.

2. Prepare any future talks or lessons.

3. Use crock pot recipes to cut down on extra cooking.

4. Prepare Family Home Evening lessons for the next day.

5. Visit those you know who are in the hospital.

6. Attend temple classes.

7. Invite someone who may be unable to cook for themselves such as an elderly person or shut-in, to share dinner with your family, or take dinner to them.

8. Make a list of members who may need a ride to sacrament meetings. Invite them to ride with you.

9. Surprise someone in need with a visit.

10. Find a unique way to fellowship less active families.

11. Have family scripture study. Younger children may want to draw representational pictures beside their favorite scriptures. This will enable them to find the same scripture and remember what it was about in the future.

12. Visit a park as a family and/or bring a friend.

13. View the christian/sermon movies.

14. Give time to a nursing home or to others who may need help reading letters from loved ones or writing them.

15. Re-visit families on your Home and Visiting teaching routes who may need to be visited.

16. Utilize time together in the car or at dinner to discuss what each family member learned at Church/home meetings that day.

17. Check out filmstrips from the library and view them.

18. Rest and reflect on what was taught in Church classes.

19. Listen to scripture tapes or view scripture videos.

20. Read material that is Church-oriented or uplifting.

21. Tape morning broadcasts of christian devotionals and play them back during the day and throughout the week.

22. Read children's scripture story books to them. Visit the ward library and find out what is available to check out.

23. Pair children up in separate rooms together with games or books, etc. This allows each child time to build a one-on-one relationship with each of his/her brothers and sisters. Partners are rotated each Sunday.

24. While children are spending special time together, Mom and Dad can spend time alone together and perhaps fix an unusual or creative breakfast for the children.

25. Label and catalogue the family picture journal (photos, slides or videotapes of family.)

26. Have a simple and short music lesson. Familiarize children with music symbols and words. Teach them how to lead music.

27. Prepare stories about your children to tell them.

28. Tell children stories of when you were their age.

29. Have grandma or grandpa tell stories about themselves or the lives of other relatives.

30. Record these personal profiles for Book of Remembrance or journals.

31. Decorate special jars for tithing and mission funds.

32. Take a walk as a family. Discuss the blessing Heavenly Father has given us through nature.

33. Invite married family members home for a visit or go visit them.

34. Decorate a Sunday "Things to Do" box and fill it with ideas. Draw one out each Sunday to do.

35. Plan and rehearse a family musical recital.

36. Perform the recital at a nursing home or children's hospital.

37. Make shadow portraits or silhouettes of family members or of the prophets. Include them in scrap books or use to decorate cards.

38. Tape a special program for a missionary or loved one far away. Include talks, stories and songs.

39. Make phone calls or write letters to those special friends and loved ones to let them know you're thinking of them.

40. Prepare home or visiting messages for the month.

41. Set goals or begin a "Pursuit of Excellence" program. Chart your success each Sunday.

42. Compose an original song expressing a lovely thought or deed. Encourage children to express themselves also.

43. Develop greater love and appreciation for music by listening to great works.

44. As a family, invent a design, crest, emblem or logo to display on a family banner. When it is complete, unfurl it during family home evenings or other special family occasions.

45. Practice a skill such as knitting, etc. Make a gift for a friend.

46. "Adopt" a friend. Select someone special.

47. Have a "Hands Across the Water" day. Let return missionaries in the ward help you select a country. Help family members to become familiar with the customs of LDS around the world.

48. Customize copies of the Book for the missionaries to give out by marking important scriptures and adding your personal testimony.

49. Produce a puppet show depicting a historical Church event.

50. Dramatize events from the Bible and Books  with family members. Be sure to dress for your parts.

51. Form a rhythm band to help younger children learn the music to hymns and Primary songs.

52. Construct an "I'm Grateful For..." mobile to hang in children's rooms.

53. Take turns role playing and acting out stories.

54. Make a set of paper dolls representing the members of your family. Use them in flannel board stories or at Family Home Evening to demonstrate proper reverence, behavior at Church, manners and attitudes.

55. Make gifts such as sachets from cloves, oranges and ribbon to give away to "adopted friends."

56. Have each family member make a personal scrap book. Include pictures, important letters, certificates, school and Primary papers.

57. Make some kind of book. Write a story inside with a good moral. Illustrate it and then make a tape recording, complete with sound effects and music. Younger children may then look and listen to the book themselves.

58. Make a tape or letter. Have children set goals for the year and share feelings or testimonies. Save the tapes and letters for a year and then listen and/or read them.

59. Compose some poetry or write a story.

60. Write letters, thank-you cards, get-well and thinking-of-you notes.

70. Plan a family service project. Ask your bishop for ideas.

73. Make dot-to-dot pictures of objects like the golden plates or the start of Bethlehem to keep little ones quietly entertained.

87. Write a giant letter to the missionaries from your ward. Each person writes his letter on the same large piece of butcher paper.

88. Plan family outings, picnics, camp outs, vacations, and holidays.

89. Make a picture book for each family member. Include pictures of themselves at different ages, other family members, and special events.

90. Take a few minutes to plan next Sabbath's activities. Decide what must be done during the week to prepare for it.

91. Plan a family D.I. drive day where the family cleans the house and garage in search of items to donate.

92. Tape Church/home meetings for members who usually are unable to attend.

93. Practice reverence with children by sitting quietly for a short period of time. Listen to quiet music or conference tapes.

94. Play this game or make up a variation. Cut the Articles of Faith and several scriptures which have been memorized by players into words. Mount the cut words on cards. Deal six cards to each player and put the rest into a draw pile. Take turns starting a scripture or Article of Faith. As each player takes his turn, add an appropriate card from your hand to your own and the other players' sentences. If you do not have a card that can be played, discard one card to the bottom of the draw pile and take a new one. If drawn card is still inappropriate, pass. Winner is the fist one to use all the cards in his or her hand.

95. Play the Scripture Hunt game. Each player takes a different page of scriptures. After reading that page, each player then writes a one sentence question, the answer to which is found somewhere on the page. At the signal, swap pages and questions. The first player to locate the correct answer to his question is the winner.

96. Play Hang Man, or Word Scramble on chalk boards. Use Church-related words.

97. Learn some new finger plays with the children.

98. Have a memory jolt (quiz) contest. See what is remembered from last Sabbath.

99. Make your own filmstrip stories. Dip an old filmstrip in bleach for a few minutes. When the emulsion is loose, rinse the film under running water (do not touch the bleach). Wipe dry and then add your own pictures with permanent colors.

100. Select a talent you would like to develop. Set some goals to help you achieve the talent and then work toward developing it. 

101. Each Sabbath, feature a different family member in a "Why I Love You" spotlight. Display a picture and a hobby or craft of that person in a prominent place for a week. Write a brief history of the member and list all of their qualities and strengths.

102. To encourage family to know who the current prophets and apostles are, photocopy their pictures from the center of the conference issue of the Ensign. Make enough copies for half the members of your family. Play a simple game by putting a small treat (M&M, small marshmallow or nut, etc.) on each individual's picture. Divide into partners. One partner decides which one of the individuals pictured is going to be "it", and either writes I down, or tells mom or dad. The other partner tries to not name who was picked. He will call each apostle or member of the First Presidency by name. ("Was it President Thomas S. Monson?") For every person he names who was not the named, the other partner gets to eat all the remaining treats. (BTW, our children call this game "Don't Eat the Prophet.") :-)

103. Keep a notebook with a section for each child to use for interviews. At our house, an interview consists of us meeting one-on-one with the children, and asking them, "Okay. What would you like to talk about? What would you like help with? What would you like to see done differently around here? What would you like to have happen in the next week or so? It there anything you want or need that isn't being taken care of?" Take careful notes of what is discussed and follow through during the week. At the end of the interview, mom and dad might then have a request for the child such as, "it would mean a lot to me if you would work on (whatever) during the week." Because they have had their concerns listened to, they are usually very willing to work on our concerns. Review the children¹s list with them during the next interview, so they can see that you did what they asked where you could.

104. Study the Bible/Spirit of Prophecy books as a family, so that everyone knows what counsel our prophet Sister White said. Also read pioneer papers and books who setup the very foundation of the SDA church has given us. Determine what you are going to do in your home as a family to implement their counsel.

105. Appoint yourselves to the unofficial Ward Welcoming Committee. When a new family comes to church, show up at their house later that day with a plate of cookies and note saying who you are, prepared in advance. Make it a point to check with the quorum and Relief Society secretaries to find out the names and addresses of new people in the ward. Sometimes just one person or family can make all the difference between people feeling unwelcome, and having them feel, "Gosh! This ward is so friendly!" Be that one person or family.

106. Have an object lesson contest in your family. Pick one or two items around the house-any simple tool or item-and have everyone come up with a story about how that item can illustrate a gospel principle. ­Leslie North

107. One of the things we have tried is that my mother gave us a scripture to memorize and a topic. With that topic we had to write a short 5 min talk. We could use the scripture that we had memorized, (it was usually related.) The older kids would help the younger kids. Then after a set amount of time, we would al give our talks to each other. Mom has kept these talks in a binder for our use if we ever had to give talks in church. It was neat to see how much we could learn about a certain topic, and it is neat to watch the younger kids grasp on to the gospel, and be able to memorize scriptures and testify of their truthfulness. ­Heidi Scott

108. We hold our lesson for Family Home Evening on Sabbaths. Then on Monday, we plan a fun activity or a "field trip", like going to the library, the park, etc. These are things and /or places we wouldn¹t go to or do on Sabbath. This has worked wonders in our home for having regular Family Home Evening. ­Brent Gadberry

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE SABBATH DAY

 

Q. As a Christian, I worship God every day of the week- so I don't need to keep the Sabbath anymore...

A. Amen to worshiping God every day of the week...  Open your Bible, however, and read the Sabbath commandment again (Exodus 20:8-11).  You will read that the primary purpose of the Sabbath commanmdment wasn't to set aside a day to worship God (although worshiping God and remembering Him on this day flows naturally from keeping this commandment), it was to designate one, specific, special day for us to rest from work- just like God did when he created the heavens and the earth.

 

Q. The Sabbath is not important anymore because it is the only one of the Ten Commandments that isn't taught in the New Testament...

A. Although a lot of people make this argument, it simply isn't true...  Most Christians agree that we are supposed to do as Jesus did (with the exception of the sacrificial laws- the laws relating to sacrifice for forgiveness of sins- which were done away with at the cross), so let's start there:  the following verses show that Jesus kept the Sabbath- Luke 4:16, Mark 6:2, Luke 6:6, Luke 13:10-11.  Teaching by example is one of the greatest forms of teaching, so how can one say that the Sabbath wasn't taught by Jesus?  (to learn more about what Jesus did on the Sabbath and said about the Sabbath, please visit the What did Jesus do? page) Furthermore, Jesus's followers kept the Sabbath day holy in His death - Luke 23:54-56  (they delayed His burial to rest on the Sabbath)- so clearly they didn't get a message from Jesus anytime during His life that the Sabbath day wasn't important anymore.  And, after He was resurrected, there is no record stating that Jesus said anything about changing the Sabbath law...  but there are verses showing that his disciples still kept the Sabbath - Acts 13:13-15; 42, Acts 13:27.

 

Q. What about Jesus picking corn (grain) and healing on the Sabbath day?

A. This answer may be found on our What did Jesus do? page.

 

Q. What about Acts 20:7, "And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight." ?

A. The disciples were merely eating a meal together and visiting with each other... The Bible says that they broke bread together daily (see Acts 2:46).  Furthermore, the Bible clearly shows in other passages, in the very same book of Acts, that Paul and the other disciples were Sabbath-keepers (see Acts 17:2, 16:12-13, 18:4).

The irony of using this passage to defend Sunday-keeping is that, when you really understand what is happening here, you will find it is actually a testament to the Paul's Sabbath (Saturday)-keeping.  Let us explain...  As explained on the page in this website titled "The seventh day of the week," a Biblical day actually starts at the sundown of, what we would call, the previous day.  Therefore, when you look at this passage you can see that Paul was actually preaching on Saturday night (Saturday after sundown is considered the beginning of Sunday in the Bible.)  Paul then departed on foot Sunday at daybreak to continue his journey.  Paul had been residing in Troas for seven days (Acts 20:6).  He chose to leave Troas Sunday morning because he was keeping the Sabbath by resting on Saturday (back then traveling was a lot of work).  If Sunday had been the disciples' day of rest, then Paul would not have left for his long journey on that day.

 

Q. What about Revelation 1:10, "I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet..." ?

A. Does this passage or any other passage in the Bible say that this "Lord's day" is Sunday?  No.  Therefore, if we base our answer on the Bible, it would be incorrect to assume that this Lord's day, referred to here in the Bible, is Sunday.  Thankfully, the Bible does identify which day is the Lord's day...

"And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath," -Luke 6:5 (see also Matthew 12:8, Mark 2:28)

"For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it," -Exodus 20:11.

"Say to the Israelites, 'You must observe my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am the LORD, who makes you holy," -Exodus 31:13.

Clearly, if any day is to be Biblically identified as the "Lord's day," then it is the Sabbath day (Saturday).  Another explanation for this "Lord's day" could be that it is simply a phrase to describe the period of time in the future that John is experiencing this vision.  Even if you wanted to still argue that this "Lord's day" is Sunday (which there is absolutely no evidence whatsoever for), you wouldn't be able to prove anything about Sunday-observance with it because all this passage does is simply state that this day was "the Lord's day."  It does not say anything about this day being a new subsitute for the Sabbath day.  It does not say anything about the seventh-day Sabbath being abolished.

 

Q. What about Colossians 2:16-17, "Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ."

A. Many scholars acknowledge that the "sabbaths" referred to here are not the weekly Sabbath days but that they are the yearly sabbath festival days associated with the ceremonial laws -which were done away with at the cross.  (Please clickhere to read about the difference between ceremonial laws and the moral laws.)  If this passage is taken in context, this would be a logical explanation....

"Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.  Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:  Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ." -Colossians 2:14-17  

You can see that Paul was referring to the "handwriting of ordinances that were nailed to the cross" with Jesus' death when speaking of the "holydays, new moons, and sabbath days."  It is logical to assume that he is talking about ceremonial laws here since "meat," "drink," "new moons," and "holy days" (other than the weekly Sabbath day) have nothing to do with the moral laws... also known as the Ten Commandments.  Also, we can see from other New Testament books written about times after Jesus' death (examples include Romans & Revelation) that it was still important for Jesus' followers to keep the Ten Commandments.  Therefore, since the Bible does not contradict itself, Paul must have been referring to the ceremonial laws when he was speaking of the laws that were "nailed to the cross"... and, sinceColossians 2:16-17 follows this passage and starts off "Let no man therefore judge you..." and then lists things that were associated with ceremonial laws, such as meat and drink, it makes perfect sense to conclude that Paul was speaking of ceremonial sabbath days, not the weekly Sabbath day.  Also, describing the ceremonial laws as a "shadow of things to come" makes perfect sense since everything about the ceremonial laws foreshadowed the death of Jesus.

 

Q. What about Romans 14:5, "One man esteemeth one day above another:  another esteemeth every day alike.  Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind."

A. Firstly, the Sabbath day is mentioned nowhere in this passage.  Let us put this passage into context to get a better idea of what we are looking at:  

"Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth:  for God hath received him.  Who art thou that judgest another man's servant?  to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.  One man esteemeth one day above another:  another esteemeth every day alike.  Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.  He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it.  He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks." - Romans 14:2-6

The passages before and after Romans 14:5 are talking about eating and fasting.  It would be very strange for Paul to have sandwiched in a mysterious statement about the Sabbath day in the middle of a conversation about fasting.  Based on the context, it is logical to assume, in Romans 14:5, that Paul is talking about traditions of the peoples of his time- days that they chose to be related to fasting and feasting.  Even if Paul wasn't referring to days associated with fasting, there are countless other explanations that would be much more probable than assuming that he was talking about the Sabbath day.  Pretend you are in a court of law- trying to prove that the Sabbath day is null and void by using this passage- it is easy to understand why this evidence would be worthless.  The Sabbath day isn't mentioned anywhere in Romans 14.  On the contrary, just a few chapters earlier, in Romans 7, Paul states that "...the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good." - Romans 7:12.

 

Q. But when the New Testament shows Jesus' followers reading in the synagogue on the Sabbath, they are always reading to Jews...  therefore, they are just trying to accomadate the Jews on their day of worship... right?

A. Acts 13:42-45 (KJV, NKJV) shows that Jesus' disciples taught the Gentiles on the Sabbath day (Saturday) as well.

 

Q. Where can I find a church that keeps the Biblical Sabbath day (Saturday) and does not worship the Pagan Trinity gods?

A. I don't know of any at this time who keep ALL TEN commandments. Worshiping the false Trinity gods breaks the first three commandments. IF you break one commandment, you have broken all of them according to James in the Bible.  Many all ten commandment and Sabbath keepers who have been unable to find a suitable Sabbath-keeping church in their area have chosen to start their own home churches.


Teaching our children how to keep the Sabbath Day holy at an early age is very important but can be somewhat difficult. Children may become frustrated when they are continually told they cannot do certain things on the Sabbath Day.
