Ellen White NOT Inspired or Merely the Opinion of Sister White?

The world fraternal twins Elizabeth and Ellen Harmon were born into on November 26, 1827, was more like a third world country than the USA of today, according to Daniel Walker Howe in the Oxford History of the United States—1815-1848—What Hath God Wrought.

“When I sent you a testimony of warning and reproof, many of you declare it to be merely the opinion of Sister White. You have thereby insulted the Spirit of God.”—1 Selected Messages, 27.

"Our position on the Testimonies is like the keystone to the arch. Take that out and there is no logical stopping place till all the special truths of the message are gone. Nothing is surer than this, that this message and the visions (of Mrs. White ) belong together" (Review and Herald, Supplement, August 14, 1883).

2 Chronicles 20:20: - “Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.”

Truths Indelibly Traced by the Holy Spirit

"The 1st 2000 years ended in a rejection of God at the Flood; the 2nd 2000 yrs ended in a rejection of the Son. Beware of rejecting the Holy Spirit." Amazing, wonderful treatise on the Holy Spirit: Download and print the PDF study about the Holy Spirit which is titled "The Promised Life" by Imad Awde: here.

"…The Sabbath is the seal, and the Holy Spirit is the sealer” James S. White, Advent Review, 1:57, September 1850.

"The correct understanding of the ministration in the heavenly sanctuary is the foundation of our faith" (EV 221:2).

"That we reaffirm our abiding confidence in the Testimonies of Sister White to the church, as the teaching of the Spirit of God" (SDA Year Book for 1914, p. 253).

"Our position on the Testimonies is like the keystone to the arch. Take that out, and there is no logical stopping place till all the special truths of the message are gone ... Nothing is surer than this, that the message and the visions [of Mrs. White] belong together, and stand or fall together" (Review and Herald Supplement, Aug. 14, 1883).

"The Spirit of Prophecy [Mrs. White's writings] is a fundamental part of this message ... Since the rise of this message, this denomination has believed in the Spirit of Prophecy. We have preached it as widely as we have the Sabbath and other kindred truths, and believe it as thoroughly ... To us it makes a vast difference whether one whom we have regarded from the rise of this message as being endowed with the prophetic gift is a prophet of God, or whether she is not" (A Statement [by the General Conference Committee], May, 1906, pp. 10, 86).

"It is from the standpoint of the light that has come through the Spirit of Prophecy [Mrs. White's writings] that the question will be considered, believing as we do that the Spirit of Prophecy is the only infallible interpreter of Bible principles, since it is Christ through this agency giving the real meaning of his words." (G.A. Irwin, [many years president of the General Conference] Page 1 of a tract entitled "The Mark of the Beast")

Those who at first do not accept her visions, Mrs. White says, "must not be set aside, but long patience and brotherly love should be exercised toward then until they find their position and become established for or against." But, "if they fight against the visions," then, she says, "the church may know that they are not right" ("Testimonies," Vol. I., p. 328).

More here:

"The whole company of believers were UNITED in the truth. There were those who came in with strange doctrines, but we were never afraid to meet them. Our experience was wonderfully established by the revelation of the Holy Spirit. . . .It was some time after my second son was born [1849] that we were in great perplexity regarding certain points of doctrine. I was asking the Lord to unlock my mind, that I might understand His WordSuddenly I seemed to be enshrouded in clear, beautiful light, and ever since, the Scriptures have been an open book to me. (Manuscript 135, Nov.4, 1903, "Establishing the Foundation of Our Faith.")

Did you get that?

"In a vision given me at Bordoville, Vermont, December 10, 1871, I was shown that the position of my husband has been a very difficult one. A pressure of care and labor has been upon him. His brethren in the ministry have not had these burdens to bear, and they have not appreciated his labors. The constant pressure upon him has taxed him mentally and physically.I was shown that his relation to the people of God was similar, in some respects, to that of Moses to Israel. There were murmurers against Moses, when in adverse circumstances, and there have been murmurers against him." Testimonies for the Church Volume 3, Page 85

As Moses was a type of Christ leading the ancient children of Israel, so James White, says Ellen White, was a type of Moses, leading the modern children of Israel into the Heavenly Cannan.

Isn't that great?

Here is a little paper I've put together in PDF and WORD format to show this more clearly:
PDF: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B2nmi6r-BcI3WlZhTzdPOFVzbEk/edit?usp=sharing

These old writings are to be studied and brought to view today for those of us who are striving to conform to the image of Christ by the grace of God. Reaffirm! Reprint! Retell! The challenge remains today to implement what was called for 100 years ago.

“Let the aged men who were pioneers in our work speak plainly, and let those who are dead speak also, by the reprinting of their articles in our periodicals.”—Manuscript 62, 1905, cited in “The Integrity of the Sanctuary Message.”

“We
are to REPEAT THE WORDS of the pioneers in our work, who knew what it cost to search for the truth as for hidden treasure, and who labored to lay the foundation of our workThe word given me is, Let that which these men have written in the past be reproduced.”—Review and Herald, May 25, 1905.

Although Ellen rebuked many different people, she had no rebukes for her own husbands blatant rebuke of the trinity doctrine, who called it a:

  1. "Catholic error"
  2. "spiritualism"
  3. "absurdity"
  4. "Neither are the Father and the Son parts of the “three-one God”
  5. the trinity "denied the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ"
  6. "The inexplicable Trinity" that it is "bad enough",
  7. "the old trinitarian absurdity"
  8. "a fundamental error"
  9. "the Trinity, which does away the personality of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ"
  10. a "vestige of Papacy"

    The fact is that James Springer White totally and unequivocally rejected the doctrine of the trinity until his death in 1881.

Also consider Ellen White's statement found in Patriarchs and Prophets page 480 where she says "Moses was a type of Christ." Ellen White said James S. White was: * similar to "Moses to Israel" Testimonies for the Church Volume 3, Page 85

The following quote shows how BOTH JAMES & ELLEN were non-trinity (triune) believers. Notice the "we" and "our" in the quote below written by James S. White:

"This missionary seemed very liberal in his feelings toward all Christians. But after catechizing us upon the trinity, and finding that WE ("we" Ellen and James) were not sound upon the subject of his triune God, he became earnest in denouncing Unitarianism, which takes from Christ his divinity, and leaves him but a man. Here, as far as our views were concerned, he was combating a man of straw. We do not deny the divinity of Christ. We delight in giving full credit to all those strong expressions of Scripture which exalt the Son of God. We believe him to be the divine person addressed by Jehovah in the words, "Let us make man." He was with the Father before the world was. He came from God, and he says, "I go to him that sent me." The apostle speaks of Christ as he now is, our mediator, having laid aside our nature. "If any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous." (James White, Review and Herald, June 6th 1871, ‘Western Tour’)

The next week James wrote clearly that Ellen White did  NOT agree with the creed of trinitarians.

"We invite all to compare the testimonies of the Holy Spirit through Mrs. W., with the word of God. And in this we do not invite you to compare them with your creed. That is quite another thing. The TRINITARIAN may compare them with his creed, and because they do not agree with it, condemn them. The observer of Sunday, or the man who holds eternal torment an important truth, and the minister that sprinkles infants, may each condemn the testimonies' of Mrs. W. because they do not agree with their peculiar views. And a hundred more, each holding different views, may come to the same conclusion. But their genuineness can never be tested in this way." { James White RH June 13, 1871}

"The great sin of the Jews was their rejection of Christ; the great sin of the Christian world would be their rejection of the law of God (Christ IS the law of God manifested to us - "thy law is truth" and "I am the truth" and they law is perfect and the lamb is perfect without blemish - this is the MIND of God = let this MIND be IN you that was also in Christ Jesus), the foundation of His government in heaven and earth" The Great Controversy 1888, p. 22.2

“Korah and his companions rejected light until they became so blinded that the most striking manifestations of His power were not sufficient to convince them; they attributed them all to human or satanic agency . .

“It was this act that sealed their doom. They had committed the sin against the Holy Spirit, a sin by which man’s heart is effectually hardened against the influence of divine grace.

“ ‘Whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man,’ said Christ, ‘it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him.’ Matthew 12:32. These words were
spoken by our Saviour when the gracious works which He had performed through the power of God were attributed by the Jews to Beelzebub.

“It is through the agency of the Holy Spirit that God communicates with man; and those who deliberately reject this agency as satanic, have cut off the channel of communication between the soul and Heaven.

“God works by the manifestation of His Spirit to reprove and convict the sinner; and if the Spirit’s work is finally rejected, there is no more that God can do for the soul. The last resource of divine mercy has been employed. The transgressor has cut himself off from God, and sin has no remedy to cure itself. There is no reserved power by which God can work to convict and convert the sinner. ‘Let him alone’ (Hosea 4:17) is the divine command. Then ‘there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.’ Hebrews 10:26-27.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, 405.

1.] THE SPIRIT OF 1888.

A.] KORAH, DATHAM AND ABIRAM.

                Throughout the “Testimonies” of Sr. White, dealing with the rebellion of 1888, the messenger of the Lord, raises the experience of Korah, Dathan and Abiram and their rebellion against God, Moses and Aaron, as being repeated by those leading the rebellion in 1888.

1888 Materials, pp. 599, 600 & 602 – 604: - “It was plainly revealed what your influence has been, what it was in Minneapolis. I knew for day by day the Lord revealed this to me, and ever since that meeting I have known that you were deceived and deceiving others that you will not only have in the day of final accounts to meet your own course of action but the result of your influence upon other minds. You have refused my testimonies given me for you from the Lord just as much have you labored to make them of none effect as did Korah, Dathan and Abiram. You have done this and thus it is charged against you in the books of heaven. You have strengthened the hands and minds of such men as Larson, Porter, Dan Jones, Eldridge and Morrison and Nicola and a vast number through them. All quote you, and the enemy of righteousness looks on pleased. I was warned of this state of things in 1882.[1] I was shown that which would be if you did not make thorough work out of the difficulty you were in. Have you ever made confession to Prof. Bell in regard to the position and work done at that time? Have you let this sin go before hand to judgment that (it) may be blotted out when the time of refreshing shall come and He shall send Jesus. I have had some things clearly opened to me night before last. How much better position would you be in today had you believed the words that God gave me for you at Minneapolis and how much you might have done to stop the tide of unbelief that was flowing so swiftly at that meeting. I presented before you the things which the Lord had presented before me while in Switzerland as well as in 1882. You strengthened the hands of evil doers. Consider how many joined Korah, Dathan and Abiram. Two hundred and fifty princes, men of renown in the tribes of Israel. They made as firm a stand as you have made. They worked as you have worked. The people believed in Korah, Dathan and Abiram because they set things before them in a perverted light. They honestly thought these men were right. They had heard so many false representations and that Moses and Aaron were all wrong, but the result testified who were right and who were wrong. Korah, Dathan and Abiram had done a similar work as you have been doing.  … I cannot harmonize with you or with the spirit Elder Butler has manifested. I tell you it is not of God, it is another spirit. … I cannot endure the thought of you being left as were Korah, Dathan and Abiram. Whoever may join themselves with you and walk not in the light of the Lord, but in the sparks of their own kindling will lie down in darkness. … Will you be one who will strengthen (the) gainsayer? Will you be found among the Korah's, Dathan's and Abiram's at such a time as this? Christ asks, "When the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?" Luke 18:8. After your course of action has unsettled the minds and faith in the testimonies, what have you gained? If you should recover your faith, how can you remove the impressions of unbelief you have sown in other minds?” [Letter to Uriah Smith; March 8, 1890.]

IBID., pp. 911 & 912: - “But when the power and Spirit of God rested upon his messengers they were on holy ground. To ignore the Spirit of God, to charge it with being the Spirit of the devil, placed them in a position where God had no power to reach their souls. No power in any of God's provisions to correct the erring can reach them. Some in Battle Creek will surely reach this point if they do not change their course. They will place themselves where none of God's ordained means will be able to set them right. Their will is not God's will, their persistency is not the perseverance of the saints. To speak against Christ, charging his work to Satanic agencies, and attributing the manifestations of the Spirit to fanaticism, is not of itself a damning sin, but the spirit that leads men to make these assertions places them in a position of stubborn resistance, where they cannot see spiritual light, Some will never retrace their steps, they will never humble their hearts by acknowledging their wrongs, but like the Jews will continually make assertions that mislead others. They refuse to investigate evidence candidly and frankly, but like Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, set themselves against the light.”  [Ms. 30, 1890; Read at the 1891 General Conference Session; March, 1891.]

IBID., p. 989: - “Now men are placed in responsible positions who knew not Joseph. Straight testimonies have been borne to head off their ambitious projects again and again, it has hurt their pride. They have but little faith in me or the messages the Lord has given me. It would not take a very strong movement to have a state of things created as in the days of old, and Korah, Dathan, and Abiram would come to the point.” [Letter to S. N. Haskell; May 29, 1892.]

IBID., pp. 1067 & 1068: - “Never before have I seen among our people such firm self-complacency and unwillingness to accept and acknowledge light as was manifested at Minneapolis. I have been shown that not one of the company who cherished the spirit manifested at that meeting would again have clear light to discern the preciousness of the truth sent them from heaven until they humbled their pride and confessed that they were not actuated by the Spirit of God, but that their minds and hearts were filled with prejudice. The Lord desired to come near to them, to bless them and heal them of their backslidings, but they would not hearken. They were actuated by the same spirit that inspired Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. Those men of Israel were determined to resist all evidence that would prove them to be wrong, and they went on and on in their course of disaffection until many were drawn away to unite with them. Who were these? Not the weak, not the ignorant, not the unenlightened. In that rebellion there were two hundred and fifty princes famous in the congregation, men of renown. What was their testimony? "all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the Lord is among them: wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the congregation of the Lord?" [Num. 16:3]. When Korah and his companions perished under the judgment of God, the people whom they had deceived saw not the hand of the Lord in this miracle. The whole congregation the next morning charged Moses and Aaron, "Ye have killed the people of the Lord" [verse 41], and the plague was upon the congregation, and more than fourteen thousand perished. When I purposed to leave Minneapolis, the angel of the Lord stood by me and said: "Not so; God has a work for you to do in this place. The people are acting over the rebellion of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. I have placed you in your proper position, which those who are not in the light will not acknowledge; they will not heed your testimony; but I will be with you; My grace and power shall sustain you. It is not you they are despising, but the messengers and the message I send to My people.” [ Letter to Frank & Hattie Belden; November 5, 1892.]

IBID., pp. 1324 – 1326: - “Just as soon as a man separates from God so that his heart is not under the subduing power of the Holy Spirit, the attributes of Satan will be revealed, and he will begin to oppress his fellowmen. An influence goes forth from him that is contrary to truth and justice and righteousness. This disposition is manifested in our institutions, not only in the relation of workers one to another, but the desire shown by one institution to control all others. Men who are entrusted with weighty responsibilities, but who have no living connection with God, have been and are doing despite to the Holy Spirit. They are indulging the very same spirit as did Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, and as did the Jews in the days of Christ. (See Matt. 12:22-29; 31 - 37.) Warnings have come from God again and again for these men, but they have cast them aside and ventured on in the same course. … The perils of the last days are upon us. Satan takes control of every mind that is not decidedly under the control of the Spirit of God. Some have been cultivating hatred against the men whom God has commissioned to bear a special message to the world. They began this satanic work at Minneapolis. Afterward, when they saw and felt the demonstration of the Holy Spirit testifying that the message was of God, they hated it the more, because it was a testimony against them. They would not humble their hearts to repent, to give God the glory, and vindicate the right. They went on in their own spirit, filled with envy, jealousy, and evil surmisings, as did the Jews. They opened their hearts to the enemy of God and man. Yet these men have been holding positions of trust, and have been molding the work after their own similitude, as far as they possibly could.” [Letter to O. A. Olsen; May 1, 1895.]

IBID., p. 1518: - “The publishing house at Battle Creek has been under the reproof of God for years, especially since the time of the Minneapolis meeting, when some acted the part of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.” [Letter to Sr. Lindsay; May 8, 1896.]

A SUMMARY OF KORAH, DATHAN AND ABIRAM’S REBELLION: -

                It would be well for the reader to make a close and prayerful study of the inspired account of this rebellion. Please read Numbers 16 and Spirit of Prophecy, Volume 1, pp. 296 – 308.

1.       Korah, Dathan and Abiram were leaders in the congregation or church of Israel.

2.       They influenced the 250 princes of renown within the congregation of Israel, to join their rebellion.

3.       The whole congregation believed Korah, Dathan and Abiram’s message, and sided with them in their rebellion.

4.       The message of Korah, Dathan and Abiram was, “all the congregation are holy” – Numbers 16:3. Also, they refused to believe that God had really stated that all the adults of the congregation were to die in the wilderness – See SOP., 1, pp. 298 & 299.

5.       These church leaders did NOT try to draw apart from the congregation of Israel. But, they tried to take over the congregation, and push out of the congregation, God’s Divinely appointed spokesman Moses, and God’s High Priest Aaron.

6.       This was a battle over authority. God’s prophet VERSUS the leaders of the congregation, who were preaching to the people, a pleasing, flattering, self-exalting message. This message deceived the whole congregation.

7.       This rebellion is full of instruction for God’s people, especially, just before the close of time.

Spirit of Prophecy, Volume 1, pp. 306 & 307:- “The facts relative to Korah and his company, who rebelled against Moses and Aaron, and against Jehovah, are recorded for a warning to God's people, especially those who live upon the earth near the close of time. Satan has led persons to imitate the example of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, in raising insurrection among the people of God. Those who permit themselves to rise in opposition to the plain testimony, become self-deceived. Such have really thought that those upon whom God has laid the burden of his work were exalted above the people of God, and that their counsels and reproofs were uncalled for. They have risen in opposition to the plain testimony which God would have his servants bear in rebuking the wrongs among God's people.”

[1] The two references to the year 1882 are referring to the “Testimony for the Battle Creek Church” – 1882. This pamphlet contains some of the strongest rebukes to Uriah Smith, that Sr. White ever penned. When this was reprinted in the current Testimonies for the Church, Volume 5, pp. 21 – 98,many of the pointed rebukes and the names of the offenders against God had been removed or edited. “The Testimonies Slighted” section, found on pages 62 – 84, in the present edition of Volume 5, was in the original pamphlet entitled “The Testimonies Rejected”. For a fuller discussion of this point, seeAPPENDIX A. We do find the following statement concerning Uriah Smith and the rebellion of Korah, Dathan and Abiram in 1882, six years before 1888.

Testimony for the Battle Creek Church – 1882, pp. 47 & 48: - “If you seek to turn aside the counsel of God to suit yourselves; if you lessen the confidence of God's people in the testimonies he has sent them, you are rebelling against God as certainly as were Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. You have their history. You know how stubborn they were in their own opinions. They decided that their judgment was better than that of Moses, and that Moses was doing great injury to Israel. Those who united with them were so set in their opinions, that, notwithstanding the judgments of God in a marked manner destroyed the leaders and the princes, the next morning the survivors came to Moses and said, "Ye have killed the people of the Lord." We see what fearful deception will come upon the human mind. How hard it is to convince souls that have become imbued with a spirit which is not of God. As Christ's embassador, I would say to you, Be careful what positions you take. This is God's work, and you must render to him an account for the manner in which you treat his message.”  {PH117 47.3}

Why is this history important for us today? Because MOST people fail to understand that the rebellion against the Lord did NOT begin with Ford coming in with the new Theology. Ford himself stated that he was not presenting anything new, but was simply making clearer what had been taught since the turn of the century by those in leading positions.
Korah, Dathan and Abiram = "All the congregation are holy, every one of them!" Numbers 16:3. = "Spewed out!" means "Going through!" "We are well able to take the land!" God will save us, He has to for He started this movement!"
Then the greatest miracle in the history of the world took place. You remember??? The ground opened up and swallowed those rebels- leaders first!

This history will be repeated! The command was to "SEPARATE YOURSELVES!" SOP 1:300 Moses was very wroth! as he gave that command! Sr. White was very wroth as she wrote in 1905. Long before "Ford" was a gleam in his father's eye! "... Trying to guide the midical ship into the harbor... Christ calls, "COME OUT! from among them and be ye separate! Series B7:63 1905 SOP1:306

THE REJECTION OF THE TESTIMONY OF JESUS.

                This is one of the most frequently mentioned topics found in Sr. White’s writings dealing with the rebellion of 1888. And yet, it is rarely mentioned in any detail, by the “experts” who are giving their understanding of the 1888 message and issues.

[NOTE: - For the sake of the reader, I have broken this SECTION into small sub-sections, containing the major issues relating to this subject. To save repetition, only a few choice quotes under each sub-section have been listed.]

A.     Sr. White spoke under the special direction and inspiration of the Holy Spirit at Minneapolis.

1888 Materials, pp. 308 & 309: - “I never labored in my life more directly under the controlling influences of the Spirit of God. God gave me meat in due season for the people, but they refused it for it did not come in just the way and manner they wanted it to come.” [Letter to her family; May 12, 1889.]

IBID., pp. 706 & 707: - “I attended the meeting at Minneapolis, the history of that meeting has passed into eternity with its burden of record and when the judgment shall sit and the books shall be opened there will be found registered a history that many who were at that meeting will not be pleased to meet. At that meeting I had the special light from heaven on several occasions. I never felt more decidedly the Spirit of the Lord moving upon me than at that meeting. And I know the angels of the Lord were standing by my side to help me. I seemed to live as in clear light of the Sun of Righteousness, but the spirit that prevailed at that meeting was not the Spirit of God. I had to bear a decided testimony against the spirit that prevailed, and since that time the Lord wrought in every meeting we attended, but my testimony was treated with indifference as idle tales.” [Letter to “Brethren in the Ministry”; September 17, 1890.]

IBID., p. 1565: - “I shall never, I think, be called to stand under the direction of the Holy Spirit as I stood at Minneapolis. The presence of Jesus was with me. All assembled in that meeting had an opportunity to place themselves on the side of truth by receiving the Holy Spirit, which was sent by God in such a rich current of love and mercy. But in the rooms occupied by some of our people was heard ridicule, criticism, jeering, laughter. The manifestations of the Holy Spirit were attributed to fanaticism.” [Letter to O. A. Olsen; May 31, 1896.]

B.     Sr. White wanted to leave the Minneapolis meeting early in the Conference, because of the evil spirit manifested. But her Guide, told her to stay and bear her testimony.

1888 Materials, p. 277: - “I must speak to you in reference to the meetings in Minneapolis. I at one time decided to leave the meeting because I saw and felt the strong spirit of opposition that prevailed. … The night after I had decided not to remain longer in Minneapolis, in a dream or vision of the night -- I cannot tell certainly which -- a person of tall, commanding appearance brought me a message and revealed to me that it was God's will for me to stand at my post of duty, and that God Himself would be my helper and sustain me to speak the words He should give me.” [Letter to “My dear brethren”; April, 1889.]

IBID., p. 296: - “I had messages of reproof for some but the spirit that prevailed which was not of Christ but of the enemy made of no effect my words. Christ was wounded in the house of His friends. … I was about to leave the meeting for Kansas for I could not see that my remaining would do any good. … That night the angel of the Lord stood by my bed and said to me many things which I will not attempt to write here, but I was commanded to stand at my post of duty; that there was a spirit coming in taking possession of the churches, that if permitted would separate them from God as verily as the churches who refused light that God sent them in messages of warning and of light that they might advance in regard to His second coming to our world.” [Letter to J. Fargo; May 2, 1889.]

C.      Sr. White’s testimony was rejected almost across the board, and no one would stand by her side at Minneapolis or shortly after the Conference.

1888 Materials, p. 187: - “My testimony was ignored, and never in my life experience was I treated as at that conference; and I give you, my brother, with some others of our brethren, the credit of doing what you could to bring this state of affairs about. You may have thought that you were verily doing God service; but it served the cause of the enemy rather than the cause of God.” [Letter to W. M. Healey; December 9, 1888.]

IBID., pp. 251 – 253: - “Again and again did I bear my testimony to those assembled, in a clear and forcible manner, but that testimony was not received. When I came to Battle Creek, I repeated the same testimony in the presence of Elder Butler, but there was not one who had the courage to stand by my side and help Elder Butler to see that he, as well as others, had taken wrong positions, and had misapprehended my words, and had false ideas in reference to my position and work. The prejudice of Elder Butler was greater after hearing the various reports from our ministering brethren at that meeting in Minneapolis. … I think that my brethren have a work to do before they can expect the Lord to give them light through Sister White, for they have disregarded her testimony and shown contempt for the very work that the Lord has given her to do.” [Letter to R. A. Underwood; January 26, 1889.]

IBID., p. 297: - “I bore my testimony in Battle Creek but there was not one of my brethren who had the moral courage to stand by my side and take back or confess that they had pursued a wrong course and misjudged their brethren and misjudged me. I bore my testimony in Potterville. The Spirit of the Lord attended me, but not one of those who had drank in that spirit of doubt and questioning, who had withdrawn their confidence from me and the work God had entrusted to me, confessed their mistakes and the deception they had been under. The Lord wrought for His people in Battle Creek but notwithstanding the evidences of the work of God, not one who was leavened with the spirit of doubts and suspicion and evil surmisings after they saw that life and freedom and the blessing of God was brought in to the churches by the messages borne by the very ones they had misjudged and demerited and had misstated and falsified had any words of confession. They did not then admit their wrong and confess their errors and take their stand firmly for the right.” [Letter to J. Fargo; May 2, 1889.]

IBID., p. 354: - “I tried at the meeting in Battle Creek to make my position plain, but not a word of response came from the men who should have stood with me. I stated that I stood nearly alone at Minneapolis. I stood alone before them in the conference, for the light that God had seen fit to give me was that they were not moving in the counsel of God. Not one ventured to say, "I am with you, Sister White. I will stand by you."” [Ms. 30, 1889; June, 1889.]

D.     Sr. White’s work was made so much harder by the opposition of the “brethren”.

1888 Materials, p. 255: - “My way is hedged up by my brethren. I cannot reach the very ones God wants to reach and help.” [Letter to R. A. Underwood; January 26, 1889.]

IBID., pp. 620 & 621: - “Elder Butler and Elder Smith are men who, had they been where God would have had them, would have stood by my side to help me in place of hindering me in the work which the Lord has given me to do. Those who have not had the experience and the light that these men have had are only accountable for the light which God has given them.  But the attitude of these two brethren, their words and their influence, have created for me labor, one hundredfold more taxing than it would have been if they had stood in the counsel of God. But they have not done this.” [Letter to W. A. Colcord; March 10, 1890.]

IBID., p. 676: - “I know that Jesus is my Restorer, but [I shall be presumptuous] if I do as I have done, carrying the burdens I have carried without change or rest, and going wherever invited because I fear I should show want of faith if I do not go. Thus I have worked ever since I stepped from the steamer upon American soil, and Satan had worked up matters so that my burdens and labors would be fifty-fold greater than there was any need of these being. Brother Butler has been at the foundation of it all, but he makes no confession and writes in the papers as though he were all right.” [Letter to O. A. Olsen; June 21, 1890.]

IBID., p. 795: - “Your attitude has encouraged a state of things in our churches which you have not measured. The result of your course and your working on the same line since you left Minneapolis has made the carrying out of the work given me of God to do fifty fold harder than it need to have been. You have barred my way, but O, how little did you know the real result of your work.” [Letter to Uriah Smith; December 31, 1890.]

E.      Sr. White wanted to die.

1888 Materials, p. 650: - “Well, here I am sick in bed with malaria and rheumatism which first attacked the heart and has now spread over my entire body. I do not feel any burden of my own case. I am too thoroughly sick to try to get up my will power or to present my case to God in faith. I simply do not care. I long for rest. I have wrestled for the victory until I have fallen wounded and bruised and crippled, not by the weapons of the enemy, but those of my own brethren. Perhaps some think, Well, if Sister White was really doing the work of the Lord He would have sustained her. But if they would look, a little and reason from cause to effect, they would feel the rebuke of God upon them for joining the enemy's efforts, stirred from a power from beneath. They did the very work Satan wanted them to do; now let me rest. I have no burden of anxiety to recover. I am a suffering invalid. Just let me be.” [Letter to O. A. Olsen; May 8, 1890.]

F.      Sr. White didn’t want to attend meetings because of so much opposition to her testimony.

1888 Materials, p. 252: - “But since some of my brethren hold me in the light they do, that my judgment is of no more value than that of any other, or of one who has not been called to this special work, and that I am subject to the influence of my son Willie, or of some others, why do you send for Sister White to attend your camp-meetings or special meetings? I cannot come. I could not do you any good, and it would only be trifling with the sacred responsibilities the Lord has laid upon me.” [Letter to R. A. Underwood; January 26, 1889.]

IBID., pp. 676 & 679: - “Now unless the Lord bids me, I shall not address the church here in Battle Creek until Elder Smith and those who have been in harmony with him show their colors. I set no stakes in this but I will know that the Lord bids me before I get the burden on my soul for the ones for whom I have labored so hard without the least acknowledgment or response or retraction on their part. I have had to vindicate myself and my brethren, press with all my powers against the prejudice, unbelief, false statements and misrepresentations until it almost gives me a nervous chill to think of the blindness and unreasonable Phariseeism that has been adjusted as a garment about men in prominent positions. … Will those who have withstood my labors and made of none effect the light given of God for the people now take this responsibility and labor to bring in a better state of things? I am troubled deeply, but I have no light to attend any camp meetings. I do not see what use it is for me to bear my testimony and the ministers that hear it feel it their privilege to receive or reject it as best pleases them. Let them work until they shall be convinced that God is in earnest with them.” [Letter to O. A. Olsen; June 21, 1890.]

G.     Sr. White found non-SDA’s more receptive to her message, than were SDA’s.

1888 Materials, pp. 709 & 710: - “I have far greater liberty in speaking to unbelievers, They are interested. They feel impressed by the Spirit of God, and say, It seems those words are spoken under the inspiration of the Spirit of God. O, it is the hardest place in the world to speak where great light has come to men in responsible positions. They have been enlightened, but have chosen darkness rather than light.” [Letter to J. S. Washburn; September 18, 1890.]

IBID., p. 799: - “I have more freedom speaking to unbelievers than to those who hold responsible positions, and who have had so great light and great opportunities and have not responded to the light.” [Letter to Uriah Smith; December 31, 1890.]

H.     Sr. White could not place confidence in any human being.

1888 Materials, pp. 354 & 380: - “From this time I must look alone to God, for I dare not rely upon the wisdom of my brethren. I see they do not always take God for their counsellor, but look in a large degree to the men they have set before them in the place of God. … I have in my last few weeks' experience learned what little dependence may be placed in man, for these things must be met.” [Ms. 30, 1889; June 1889.]

IBID., p. 799: - “I expect anything and lean on no one, depend on no one.” [Letter to Uriah Smith; December 31, 1890.]

I.        The “brethren” would NOT sell Great Controversy, Volume 4. Satan was in charge of the management of her books.

1888 Materials, p. 1129: - “The Lord designed that the messages of warning and instruction given through the Spirit to His people should go everywhere. But the influence that grew out of the resistance of light and truth at Minneapolis tended to make of no effect the light God had given to His people through the Testimonies. Great Controversy, vol. 4, has not had the circulation it should have had, because some of those who occupy responsible positions were leavened with the spirit that prevailed at Minneapolis, a spirit that clouded the discernment of the people of God.” [Letter to W. Ings; January 9, 1893.]

The Paulson Collection p. 140: - “Just at that time the devil was influencing minds to hold back my books published at Review and Herald. Those at the head of the work there discouraged the agents about handling "Patriarchs and Prophets" and "Great Controversy," the very books which the people should have had at once, and concentrated their efforts on "Bible Readings," promising that at a certain time they would concentrate their efforts on my books. But this promise they never kept. At the very time when "G. C." should have been circulated everywhere, it was lying idle on the shelves of the Review and Herald and Pacific Press. The light given by God for the people was hidden away in the publishing houses. The inner working of this matter was presented to me, and I saw that the very men who said that the canvassers would not handle my books, were themselves arranging matters so that they should not handle them. They told me falsehoods.” [Letter to J. N. Loughborough; February 19, 1899.]

J.        It was not God’s will that Sr. White go to Australia in 1891. The “brethren” did NOT want to hear her “Testimonies” any more.

1888 Materials, pp. 1622 & 1623: - “I have not, I think, revealed the entire workings that led me here to Australia. Perhaps you may never fully understand the matter. The Lord was not in our leaving America. He did not reveal that it was his will that I should leave Battle Creek. The Lord did not plan this, but he let you all move after your own imaginings. The Lord would have had W. C. White, his mother, and her workers remain in America. We were needed at the heart of the work, and had your spiritual perception discerned the true situation, you would never have consented to the movements made. But the Lord read the hearts of all. There was so great a willingness to have us leave, that the Lord permitted this thing to take place. Those who were weary of the testimonies borne were left without the persons who bore them. Our separation from Battle Creek was to let men have their own will and way, which they thought superior to the way of the Lord. The result is before you. Had you stood in the right position the move would not have been made at that time. The Lord would have worked for Australia by other means and a strong influence would have been held at Battle Creek, the great heart of the work. There we should have stood shoulder to shoulder, creating a healthful atmosphere to be felt in all our conferences. It was not the Lord who devised this matter. I could not get one ray of light to leave America. But when the Lord presented this matter to me as it really was, I opened my lips to no one, because I knew that no one would discern the matter in all its bearings. When we left, relief was felt by many, but not so much by yourself, and the Lord was displeased; for he had set us to stand at the wheels of the moving machinery at Battle Creek.” [Letter to O. A. Olsen; December 1, 1896.

K.     $ 10, 000 was donated to help Sr. White and the new work in Australia. It was cut off by the Pacific Press. [This would represent a fortune in those days.] The Review and Herald virtually starved Sr. White for money to live on.

1888 Materials, p. 1265: - “Well, many things of a very disagreeable character troubled me. I was depending on the means which Elder Haskell wrote was coming from America. Just when we could not draw from the treasury here, he wrote that the money would come by the next mail. But instead of the money, we received the news that Bro. Haskell took the first payment of the $10,000.00 to the Pacific Press to send here, and Bro. Jones said they needed the money at the Press, and then it would go into the general fund. I was not only grieved but indignant.” [Letter to O. A. Olsen; June 10, 1894.]

Special Instruction Regarding Royalties, page 6: - “After the publishers refused to handle my books, I had to draw from the Review and Herald for means to live on. They humiliated me in the dust by telling me they could not honor my order, for I had overdrawn.” [March 11, 1899.]

L.      Sr. White would not return to the U.S.A., when asked by Elder Olsen, because the church leaders were the slaves of Satan.

1888 Materials, p. 1564: - “Bro. Olsen you speak of my return to America. For three years I stood in Battle Creek as a witness for the truth. Those who then refused to receive the testimony given me by God for them, and rejected the evidences attending these testimonies, would not be benefited should I return.” [Letter to O. A. Olsen; May 31, 1896.]

Special Testimonies, Series A, No. 10, p. 29: - “O if I could have the joyful news that the will and minds of those in Battle Creek who have stood professedly as leaders, were emancipated from the teachings and slavery of Satan, whose captives they have been for so long, I would be willing to cross the broad Pacific to see your faces once more. But I am not anxious to see you with enfeebled perceptions and clouded minds because you have chosen darkness rather than light.”  [“To my brethren in America”; February 6, 1896.]

2 Chronicles 20:20: - “Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.”

ELLEN WHITE
Various Contested Prophecies and Quotes

Time is Almost Finished
Some will be translated, while others will die
But Lucinda said Ellen White predicted...and set date after date
But Lucinda said Ellen White predicted...they would be put in prison
But lucinda said Ellen White...was into deep fanaticism

On the internet people have put together bits of information in an attempt discredit Ellen White. On this page we will explore some of the so called “shocking quotes” or “false prophecies” of E.G.White being circulated on the internet.

Time is Almost Finished
Accusation: A prophecy that never can come true?
"My accompanying angel said, 'Time is almost finished. Get ready, get ready, get ready.' . . . now time is almost finished. . . and what we have been years learning, they will have to learn in a few months." (Early Writings, pp. 64-67).

This is a very significant statement. Mrs. White was saying that the truths that she and her associates had spent five years learning would have to be learned by new converts in only a few months.

Some are looking too far off for the coming of the Lord. Time has continued a few years longer than they expected; therefore they think it may continue a few years more, ….TIME CAN LAST BUT A VERY LITTLE LONGER”. Early Writings p. 58This was back in 1850, a lot more than “a few months” have passed and time is still not “finished”.
If these statements prove Ellen White was a false prophet then the same would apply to the New Testament, for the scriptures dwell repeatedly on the “soon coming” of Christ. Yet, that was 1800 years prior to Ellen White!1 Cor. 7:29 But this I say, brethren, THE TIME IS SHORT; it remains that both they that have wives be as though they had none……(Is Paul here recommending it’s better for people not to marry but to work for the Lord as time is short!!)

Rev. 3:11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

Rev. 22.7 Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keeps the sayings of the prophecy of this book.

Rev. 22.12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.

Rev. 22.20 He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

The above accusation is simply fulfilling1 Peter 3.3-5 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
For this they willingly are ignorant

God consistantly tells people HE IS COMING QUICKLY. He deals with each generation as if it were the last. If people believe it-- does that make them false?

No, of course not! For each person has only their lifetime to find salvation in the Lord. "Today," God says to each individaul, "is the day of salvation". Be prepared "TODAY"!

The truth is:
The methods the antagonists use to discredit Ellen G. White will work just as effectively to discredit the Bible.
Those who follow the line of reasoning used against EGW are walking on very shaky ground as they develop thinking patterns that would just as effectively deny the Bible as truth.
The same methods that vindicate the Bible also vindicate Ellen White. Ellen White's prophecies follow the same pattern as BIBLICAL prophecies. And to me that is evidence that she is a true prophet.

Some will be translated, Others Food for Worms

“At the conference a very solemn vision was given me. I saw that some of those present would be food for worms, some subjects for the seven last plagues, and some would be translated to heaven at the second coming of Christ, without seeing death.” Spiritual Gifts. Volume 2, page 208, paragraph 2. (also to be found in Life Sketches of James White and Ellen G. White (1880 edition), page 321, paragraph 3)
There is simply one little problem with this vision: It was in May, 1856! All the people present at that conference would now be more than 150 years old! The reality is that all of them have died and have been buried. This prophecy never came true!
Are prophets given “conditional” prophecies?

What about this quote, is it to be read and considered as well?

Had the purpose of God been carried out by His people in giving to the world the message of mercy, Christ would, ere this, have come to the earth, and the saints would have received their welcome into the city of God. 6T.449

GC.458.001 It was not the will of God that Israel should wander forty years in the wilderness; He desired to lead them directly to the land of Canaan and establish them there, a holy, happy people. But "they could not enter in because of unbelief." Hebrews 3:19. Because of their backsliding and apostasy they perished in the desert, and others were raised up to enter the Promised Land. In like manner, it was not the will of God that the coming of Christ should be so long delayed and His people should remain so many years in this world of sin and sorrow. But unbelief separated them from God. As they refused to do the work which He had appointed them, others were raised up to proclaim the message. In mercy to the world, Jesus delays His coming, that sinners may have an opportunity to hear the warning and find in Him a shelter before the wrath of God shall be poured out.

The thing we must realize is that God has NOT revealed the time of Christ's coming TO ANY PROPHET!
All through the Bible it is represented as SHORT, even at the door!

No prophet ever received a revelation of the exact TIME of the second coming,
even Christ Himself, while He walked on earth as a man, DID NOT KNOW THE HOUR. (Mark 13:32)
The message has always been "watch and pray for you DON'T KNOW THE HOUR!...Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping" (Mark 13: 33,36)
In other words, every person no matter what time period in earth's history they lived in were to "watch and pray" for it might be in their life time!

We believe Christ could have come "ere this". His messages to His people sought to rouse and rally them to active service for HIM, and to sound the message to the world, and if the urgency of the message had done it's work, Christ could have come ere this.

Also consider these Bible texts:

Matt. 16.27-28 For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.
Verily I [Jesus] say unto you,[His disciples] There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.

Notice Christ is speaking of "coming in glory with His angels" and "rewarding every man according to his works, AND THAT SOME STANDING THERE [in AD 31] would not die but see Christ coming in His kingdom.

Matt. 26.64 Jesus saith unto him, [Caiaphas] Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall you see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

Matt. 24.30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
Matt. 24.33-34 So likewise you, when you shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.

Now we can explain all those texts, and the same principles used to explain them will also explain EGW's position.

Firstly, the disciples all died without literally seeing the second coming of Christ.
Yet, they had a "foretaste" of it. At the transfiguration they witnessed Christ in His glory. Elijah and Moses stood beside Him. Moses was a witness to Christ's victory over sin and death. He represented those who shall come forth from the grave at the resurrection of the just. Elijah, who had been translated to heaven without seeing death, represented those who will be living upon the earth at Christ's second coming, and who will be "changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump;" when "this mortal must put on immortality," and "this corruptible must put on incorruption." 1 Cor. 15:51-53. Jesus was clothed with the light of heaven, as He will appear when He shall come "the second time without sin unto salvation." For He will come "in the glory of His Father with the holy angels." Heb. 9:28; Mark 8:38. The Saviour's promise to the disciples was now fulfilled. Upon the mount the future kingdom of glory was represented in miniature.

No, they did not live to see the actual coming of Christ to claim His kingdom, they only saw "tokens" of it. They saw the message spread, they fully believed in their hearts and minds the certainity of Christ's coming.

They experienced the fulfilment BY FAITH, not literally.

In the same way the message of EGW was a message of preparation and faith.
Indeed some at that meeting died within a few weeks-- for them the message to prepare for death was timely. Others struggled on through many trials, preaching the three angels last message of warning to the world and seeing results. Yet the vision of Christ's coming was ever reality to them THROUGH FAITH!

The New Testament is full of texts dealing with the tension between "now is" and "yet to come". (See John 5:25)

So thus we know THERE IS MORE!
Christ's prediction that there would BE PEOPLE alive who would never see death--(no not even the first death), And EGW's prediction that there would BE PEOPLE alive who would never see death, will come true.

Every generation is told that time is short, and indeed it is short for each generation as they only have their life spans to wait. Then they sleep in death till the resurrection.

YET, there will be a generation which will see the endtime events wrap up and Christ will come during their actual life span.

During that last generation, some will die, some will go through the last plagues, and some will be translated without dying even the first death.

Finally, people who have died [yes the people sitting in that room listening to EGW] who died with the hope of the third angel's message, will be resurrected in that special resurrection, some in the resurrection of life, and others in the resurrection of damnation" (John 5:29) To experience the last scenes of the unfolding drama of this earth.

At that time Matt. 26:64 will be fulfilled as Caiaphas rises to see Christ coming. But Caiaphas will not be translated into heaven, he will die again, but God's people will meet Christ in the air and join Him "in the Glory of His kingdom".

But Lucinda Said...
Accusation: Lucinda Burdick, a friend of Mrs. White in the 1840's, explains how Mrs. White often predicted Christ's return: I became acquainted with James White and Ellen Harmon (now Mrs. White) early in 1845. ... She pretended God showed her things which did not come to pass. At one time she saw that the Lord would come the second time in June 1845. The prophecy was discussed in all the churches, and in a little "shut-door paper" published in Portland, Me. During the summer, after June passed, I heard a friend ask her how she accounted for the vision? She replied that "they told her in the language of Canaan, and she did not understand the language; that it was the next September that the Lord was coming, and the second growth of grass instead of the first in June." September passed, and many more have passed since, and we have not seen the Lord yet. It soon became evident to all candid persons, that many things must have been "told her in the language of Canaan," or some other which she did not understand, as there were repeated failures.
Lucinda Burdick, wrote that from Bridgeport, Connecticut, Sept. 26, 1908, 63 years later. She was but a child in 1845, and hardly "a friend" of Ellen White. In reading Lucinda’s “accounts” one quickly recognizes that she is confusing and adding much “general” misinformation, and combining it with a brief exposure to Ellen White, and then saying her own confusion is the truth about Ellen White.

First a person must recognize that the Millerite movement involved thousands of people.
Secondly one must recognize that the great disappointment of 1844 fractured this large group of people into many divisions. Many gave up the whole message of 1844. When Ellen White received her first vision, December 1844, she and the whole group in Portland, Maine where her parents lived had pretty much given up the idea that God had led in the 1844 movement. (See WLF 21) In that first vision God showed her that He had led them in the movement and as long as they did not reject the "light behind them" and kept their eyes upon Jesus, He would lead them to the heavenly home.

Now it is true that many of the Millerites were setting repeated dates for the second coming of the Lord.
That they believed that Christ had “delayed” His coming but would come very soon is true. Yet the human longing for “a time” must not be confused with the messages given by God as HE was leading a people INTO understanding truth.

In the year 1845 there was as yet no Seventh-day Adventists as such, there were just people searching for answers. The “primary group” who were to become the leaders of Seventh-day Adventism had no published paper during this time. They didn't start publishing their "Present Truth" paper until 1849. James White's first published works were "Word to Little Flock" in April, 1847 and a single sheet containing Ellen's first two visions, in April, 1846. Neither of which specified any DATES. There were, however, papers published by other Millerites who did advocate DATES. So to say, Ellen White was “publishing“ her views in a “little shut door paper“ that Christ would come in 1845 is false. The truth is that Millerite Adventists were publishing such views quite apart from any input by Ellen White.

Thirdly, supposition that God miraculously made EGW all knowing, with mature and full understanding of all prophecy and complete knowledge of all the foundation of truths of Seventh-day Adventism in her first few visions, is pure fantasy. Ellen White was very much a human being, and one should not confuse the messages of the visions God gave her to lead them into fuller Bible study and truth, with her own human growth in understanding as she receive those messages.

All SDA doctrines came about by serious Bible Study, as the pioneers searched the scriptures to find the truth. In the year 1845 we know that many Millerites were hoping that Christ would come that October. That Ellen longed for the visions of heaven she had seen to come true at that time, is quite likely-- UNTIL, before the date even arrived, God revealed to her not to look for any SET date.
James White wrote:

It is well known that many were expecting the Lord to come at the 7th month [October by Jewish calendar] of 1845. That Christ would then come we firmly believed. A few days before the time passed, I was at Fairhaven and Dartmought, Mass., with a message on this point of time. At this time Ellen [Harmon] was with the band at Carver, Mass., where she saw in vision that we would be disappointed, and that the saints must pass through the “time of Jacob’s trouble” which was future.
Her view of Jacob‘s trouble was entirely new to us, as well as to herself.” A Word to Little Flock“, p.22
Ellen White herself wrote:
Vol.1 Testimonies to the Church page 72-73
Different times were set for the Lord to come, and were urged upon the brethren. But the Lord showed me that they would pass by, for the time of trouble must take place before the coming of Christ, and that every time that was set, and passed, would weaken the faith of God's people. For this I was charged with being the evil servant that said: "My Lord delayeth His coming."

These statements relative to time setting were printed about thirty years ago, and the books containing them have been circulated everywhere; yet some ministers claiming to be well acquainted with me, state that I have set time after time for the Lord to come, and those times have passed, therefore my visions are false. No doubt these false statements are received by many as truth; but none who are acquainted with me or with my labors can in candor make such report. This is the testimony I have ever borne since the passing of the time in 1844: "Time after time will be set by different ones, and will pass by; and the influence of this time setting will tend to destroy the faith of God's people." If I had in vision seen definite time, and had borne my testimony to it, I could not have written and published, in the face of this testimony, that all times that should be set would pass, for the time of trouble must come before the coming of Christ. Certainly for the last thirty years, that is, since the publication of this statement, I would not be inclined to set time for Christ to come, and thus place myself under the same condemnation with those whom I was reproving. And I had no vision until 1845, which was after the passing of the time of general expectation in 1844. I was then shown what I have here stated.

And has not this testimony been fulfilled in every particular? The First-day Adventists have set time after time, and notwithstanding the repeated failures, they have gathered courage to set new times. God has not led them in this. Many of them have rejected the true prophetic time, and ignored the fulfillment of prophecy, because the time passed in 1844, and did not bring the expected event. They rejected the truth, and the enemy has had power to bring strong delusions upon them that they should believe a lie. The great test on time was in 1843 and 1844; and all who have set time since then have been deceiving themselves and deceiving others.

Again in 1851 there were individuals setting a date based on "the seven year" principle (seven years following 1844) but that view was also spoken against by both Ellen White and her husband.
James White wrote:

"Some who have thus taught we esteem very highly, and love fervently as brethren, ...yet we cannot refrain from giving some reasons why we do not receive THE TIME...We do not see time in the present message; we see no necessity for it, and we do not see the hand of the Lord in it." (Aug. 19,1951)
While Ellen wrote: "I saw that some were making every thing bend to THE TIME of this next fall--that is making their calculations in reference to that time. I saw that this was wrong." (July 21, 1851)

Lucinda continues her accusations:
Once, when on their way to the eastern part of Maine, she saw that they would have great trouble with the wicked, be put in prison, etc. This they told in the churches as they passed through. When they came back, they said they had a glorious time. Friends asked if they had seen any trouble with the wicked, or prisons? They replied, "None at all."
It is quite obvious where Lucinda got this piece of confused information.

You see, Ellen White, contrary to Lucinda's charge was speaking AGAINST date setting for Christ's coming. God revealed to her that there would be a "time of trouble" BEFORE Christ would return. That is the message God revealed to her while the "Millerites" in general were setting date after date for Christ's return, her message was that they were NOT to look for ANY message based on time, there was yet prophecy to fulfilled BEFORE Christ would come that had not yet been fulfilled.
The message she taught that a great time of trouble was ahead for those who "kept the commandments of God and had the faith of Jesus", she consistantly presented for the rest of her life and it is based upon the prophetic messages of Revelation, especially Revlation 12:17, and chapters 13 and 14 etc.

Lucinda, however, presents these messages as if EGW were predicating "the time of trouble" would happen to them personally on a certain trip. This of course is a total distortion of what her message was.

Lucinda continues her accusations:
I became acquainted with James White and Ellen Harmon (now Mrs. White) early in 1845. At the time of my first acquaintance with them they were in a wild fanaticism, --used to sit on the floor instead of chairs, and creep around the floor like little children. Such freaks were considered a mark of humility. They were not married, but traveling together.
Remember, Lucinda was just a child when she met Ellen White briefly and would have been highly influenced by what others thought.

Much of Ellen White's early travels and messages were to caution AGAINST fanaticism which had invaded the "millerite" groups [There was no Seventh-day Adventist church in 1845, just the varied fragments of the Millerite movement].
What does Ellen White herself say about this fanaticism:

Early Writings page 22
At this time there was fanaticism in Maine. Some refrained wholly from labor and disfellowshiped all those who would not receive their views on this point, and some other things which they held to be religious duties. God revealed these errors to me in vision and sent me to His erring children to declare them; but many of them wholly rejected the message, and charged me with conforming to the world. On the other hand, the nominal Adventists charged me with fanaticism, and I was falsely, and by some wickedly, represented as being the leader of the fanaticism that I was actually laboring to correct.

Life Sketches pages 85-86
There were some who professed great humility, and advocated creeping on the floor like children, as an evidence of their humility. They claimed that the words of Christ in Matthew 18:1-6 must have a literal fulfillment at this period, when they were looking for their Saviour to return. They would creep around their houses, on the street, over bridges, and in the church itself.

I told them plainly that this was not required; that the humility which God looked for in His people was to be shown by a Christlike life, not by creeping on the floor. All spiritual things are to be treated with sacred dignity. Humility and meekness are in accordance with the life of Christ, but they are to be shown in a dignified way.

A Christian reveals true humility by showing the gentleness of Christ, by being always ready to help others, by speaking kind words and performing unselfish acts, which elevate and ennoble the most sacred message that has come to our world.

Now Ellen White also wrote against "cold formalism" as well as "fanatacism", thus her critics from both "extremes", by pushing to the other extreme, brought forth their misrepresentations.

As to James White traveling with Ellen White---

The way it was presented by the "critics" was that they travelled together, alone.
This was not the case.

As James White writes:
It was necessary that she should have one or more attendants. Either her sister Sarah or her faithful companion Louisa Foss traveled with her. And as neither her aged father nor feeble brother were suitable persons to travel with one so feeble, and introduce her and her mission to the people, the writer [James] fully believing that her wonderful experience and work was of God, became satisfied that it was his duty to accompany them.

And as our thus traveling subjected us tot he reproaches of the enemies of the Lord and His truth, duty seemed very clear that the one who had so important a message to the world should have a legal protector, and that we should unite our labors....[later James wrote] We were married August 30, 1846, and from that hour to the present she has been my crown of rejoicing.

Often it was a rather large group that traveled with her, as is shown here:

A visit to New Hampshire. My constant and faithful companion at this time was Louisa Foss...We were also accompanied by Elder Files and his wife, who were old and valued friends of my family, and by Brother Ralph Haskins and Elder James White. Life Sketches 77It was difficult for so many to travel, yet still, despite having several people travel with her, the critics' tongues were wagging. Thus at the age of 18, Ellen White married 25 year old James White.

Many have asked me this question whenever they come across some of her writings on my site. Out of the thousands of pages on this site I may have two dozen or so pages that have some of Ellen Gould White's writings on them. If more understood who she was, I would have far more of course. But for the sake of those who don't study as deep as others into prophetic events and don't follow the church's historic movements, I keep her writings mostly off the site. Another main reason is my ministry brings me mostly to Catholics, and other denominations that simply don't know of her. So I usually stick with Scriptures as most trust the Word. Some may look at a quote from Ellen White and figure, "she's just a women with an opinion, so I can take or leave her advice." But they cannot do that with the Word, so I usually hold off on Sister White for the sake of preventing the "option" to blow off truth.

There are times though that I just can't ignore the opportunity to share excerpts from her writings because she words things so blunt and so biblically on target that I feel compelled to share. That is why you see "some" of her work on this site. But.. who is she?

In brief, she was a woman of remarkable spiritual gifts who lived most of her life during the nineteenth century (1827-1915), yet through her writings she is still making a revolutionary impact on millions of people around the world. During her lifetime she wrote more than 5,000 periodical articles and 40 books; but today, including compilations from her 50,000 pages of manuscript, more than 100 titles are available in English. She is the most translated woman writer in the entire history of literature, and the most translated American author of either gender. Her writings cover a broad range of subjects, including religion, education, social relationships, evangelism, prophecy, publishing, nutrition, and management. Her life-changing masterpiece on successful Christian living, Steps to Christ, has been published in more than 140 languages. Seventh-day Adventists believe that Mrs. White was more than a gifted writer; they believe she was appointed by God as a special messenger to draw the world's attention to the Holy Scriptures and help prepare people for Christ's second advent. From the time she was 17 years old until she died 70 years later, God gave her approximately 2,000 visions and dreams. The visions varied in length from less than a minute to nearly four hours. The knowledge and counsel received through these revelations she wrote out to be shared with others. Thus her special writings are accepted by Seventh-day Adventists as inspired, and their exceptional quality is recognized even by casual readers. As stated in Seventh-day Adventists Believe . . . , “The writings of Ellen White are not a substitute for Scripture. They cannot be placed on the same level. The Holy Scriptures stand alone, the unique standard by which her and all other writings must be judged and to which they must be subject” (Seventh-day Adventists Believe . . . , Ministerial Association, General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, Washington D.C., 1988, p. 227). Yet, as Ellen White herself noted, “The fact that God has revealed His will to men through His Word, has not rendered needless the continued presence and guiding of the Holy Spirit. On the contrary, the Spirit was promised by our Saviour to open the Word to His servants, to illuminate and apply its teachings” (The Great Controversy, p. vii). The following is a more detailed account of the life and work of this remarkable woman who, meeting all the tests of a true prophet as set forth in the Holy Scriptures, helped found the Seventh-day Adventist church. -Ellen White: A Brief Biography

What she a prophet? Before I give my "opinion" I would like you to ask yourself one question. Has not God always had a prophet for every age of His church? The age we live in is no exception. On this site is a page entitled, "Keys to a True Prophet." On that page are many key features that both identify the prophet as well as their actions. It has been documented for all to see that Ellen G. White did in fact bear all the keys of a true prophet of God. With that said I would like to share with you an email I received on June 24, 2006 that has been shared with people from all walks of life that verifies and even confirms what I have shared here. Turns out some Rabbi's got a hold of Ellen White's work and found some rather exciting hidden truths that most readers of her work ever knew. I pray you are blessed by it...

 A Friend sent us this wonderful testimony of a Jewish Rabbi, who read Patriarchs and Prophets and accepted Jesus as his Saviour .

 A Jewish Rabbi and Ellen White

As told by Elfred Lee (Biography of Elfred Lee, artist): http://dialogue.adventist.org/articles/07_1_rasi_e.htm

Rabbi Josef (Joe) Kagan is an Eastern European Jew. His family immigrated to the United States when he was still a quite young. Musically gifted and born with a beautiful singing voice, he made his debut at age 13 in New York's famous Carnegie Hall. He later became a cantor, and then a rabbi. Several years later, he also became a member of the research staff of the then-Governor Ronald Reagan in Sacramento.

For a long time, Rabbi Kagan had very negative feelings towards Christianity and Christians because of an unfortunate incident which occurred in Europe when he was still a child; an aunt was raped by some "Christian" while a priest who held a crucifix stood over her said: "This is what you get for killing Christ." Because of his animosity as a result of her aunt's having been violated by some "Christians", he refused to touch the New Testament for a long time. However, he knew the Jewish Old Testament [Torah] extremely well as a highly-educated rabbi. Fortunately, he later learned that American Christians are not at all like her aunt's European "Christian" assaulters.

It was in 1978 at the Weimar Institute in Weimar, California where Rabbi Kagan and I got acquainted. He was already getting up in years then. After our initial meeting, my family and I developed a beautiful friendship with Joe, his wife, and his son. As our friendship blossomed, we started to study the Bible together and read some of Ellen White's books.

It was during one of our Bible study sessions that he told us an interesting story about how he somehow got hold of a book called Patriarchs and Prophets by Ellen G. White. After reading it, he was very impressed at the way it was written, and wanted to know who this Ellen White was. And then he asked my wife and me: "Who is this Ellen G. White anyway? What university did she attend? "When we told him that she had a third grade education only, he was amazed "Then, where did she learn Hebrew?" he further inquired. We told him that, to our knowledge, she did not learn any Hebrew. The more he became amazed. He told us that the information in the book is mishnaic, and the Mishnah, which is part of the Hebrew scholarship, was translated into English only in the 1940s, and that only high-level rabbis are acquainted with the information in the Mishnah. Joe further told us that, what Ellen White wrote in Patriarchs and Prophets was the history of his [Jewish] people and it was very accurate. Moreover, one had to know Hebrew to be able to write like the way she did; her sentence structure was Hebrew---the rhythm, the meter, the arrangement of words and expressions, she wrote as if she was a Hebrew and her writing was just translated into English. Then he surprisingly told us: “I am convinced that Ellen White was inspired by the same source that inspired the Hebrew prophets. Now, I am ready to become a Christian and accept Jesus Christ as my Messiah." I somehow feel that even though the Hebrew Scripture is full of prophecies pointing to the Messiah, it took Ellen White's writings to prove to him that Jesus Christ was indeed the fulfillment of all the Hebrew messianic prophecies. And only then did Joe finally pick up the New Testament and read about Jesus Christ, the Messiah, who was a Jew! Many times, I have seen Joe shed tears---for whatever reason, I don't know and I never felt comfortable enough to ask; so, let's just say, I'd like to believe that it is probably because of "his joy in finally finding the Lord". Before Joe and I got acquainted, I was commissioned to paint a mural called "Christ, The Way of Life" for the world headquarters of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Silver Spring, Maryland, just outside Washington, DC. And when Joe and I met, I was in the middle of painting the mural. The painting is based on another artwork originally "inspired" by Ellen and James White, who had commissioned an engraver to do a black and white drawing of the same subject. For some reason, Joe became very interested in the painting, and he confirmed [to me] that Ellen & James White's concept about the whole plan of salvation as  written in both the Old and New Testament was very accurate, but that somehow the engraver had misrepresented her concepts. And for some reason Joe became "quite involved" with the painting to the point where he helped me in making the details of the painting historically and theologically accurate, especially those regarding the sanctuary, the Hebrew writing on the cross, and the scene of the last supper. It was Joe who suggested to paint Jesus and His disciples in an oriental style scene, sitting on mats on the floor---not on Roman couches like some of the European artists did. He also recommended that the heads of Christ and the disciples should be covered, and to make sure that I painted the wine, the unleavened bread, and the bitter herbs "according to the exact symbols" that they were supposed to represent. Joe even made the first "stamp of approval" of the whole painting before its official unveiling.

In late 1979, the painting was unveiled during a ceremony at the Auburn [California] Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Joe even wrote a song based on one of Jesus' last words on the cross: "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" [My God, My God why have You forsaken me?] to go with the painting. And at the unveiling, seated at the organ, Joe sang---his entire body shook as he sang and openly wept. His singing was so beautiful and so moving that there was not one dry eye in the congregation that day.

The original painting now hangs in the new Seventh-Day Adventist world headquarters in Maryland. I could never have done the mural accurately and correctly without the inspiration of Rabbi Joe Kagan and Ellen White. I wish they were still alive!

On Saturday, December 22, 1979, my wife and I were at Joe's secret baptism in the Bear River near Sacramento. There were only four of us present---the minister, Joe, my wife, and I. For whatever his reason might be, he decided not to tell his wife and son that he had become a Christian. As he came up out of the cold water praising God and singing to his new Messiah, he said, "I am now a completed Jew. I have now accepted the Old and New Testament and the Messiah that all Jewish prophets talked about!"

On a recent trip to Europe where I presented workshops on art and some of my archeological work in the Middle East. I happened to meet a Jewish family from Israel. Shalom David is originally from Iraq and his wife is from Chile, and they have become Christians. They are attending college in Europe. Shalom David and his wife invited me to their home for supper on Friday night [Shabbat]. It was a most enjoyable evening as he, his wife and their beautiful children sang and celebrated the arrival of Sabbath as Jews have done for thousands of years. As we ate, I told them the story of Rabbi Kagan, and they got very excited. Shalom said, "Believe it or not, the same thing happened to me! I would have rather burned the Bible than touch it! I wanted nothing to do with Christianity, but after I read the writings of Ellen White, somehow I felt that the Spirit of God was on that woman. Her writings are as if she wrote in Hebrew. You can definitely hear the Hebrew rhythm, meter and expressions in her books. I also believe she was inspired by the same source as the Hebrew prophets. And she has helped me fall in love with Jesus Christ as my Messiah." [Let me point out that, there is presently quite a bit of opposition to Ellen White's writings in Europe.]

After returning from Europe, for some reason, I met another rabbi living here in California, Rabbi Ben, who invited me and a group of Seventh-Day Adventists for guess what? Supper on Friday evening [Shabbat], He went through the whole pre-Sabbath meal ceremony just like Rabbi Kagan and my other new found friend [Shalom David] in Europe. During the meal, I told the group about Rabbi Kagan and Shalom David's separate experiences in "accidentally" reading Ellen White's book, Patriarchs and Prophets. Surprisingly Rabbi Ben said that he had a similar experience. He hated the Bible, particularly the New Testament, until he read Ellen White's book which somehow opened his eyes and "brought him to Christ" and which helped him to read the New Testament and to fall in love with the Messiah.

Rabbi Ben's initial encounter with Ellen White's Patriarchs and Prophets took place while visiting one of the most influential rabbis in America, whose name he preferred not to mention [to protect the rabbi]. As the other rabbi and Rabbi Ben chatted, somehow Rabbi Ben could not help but scan the other rabbi's extensive collection of books which lined an entire wall of the other rabbi's home library, and there he saw the book Patriarchs and Prophets by Ellen White. Apparently, Rabbi Ben must have previously heard or known of Ellen White because he asked the other rabbi about Ellen White's book, where he got it, and why he would have a book by a Christian author in his library. The other rabbi simply replied, "It is a very authoritative source about our history as Jewish people."

Finally, somehow the 3ABN television network people got wind of my experiences, and I was invited to share on television my encounters with the three Orthodox Jews-turned-Christian because of Ellen White's Patriarchs and Prophets. After my TV appearance, my telephone has rung day and night with calls from people from as far away as India and Australia telling me that they want to know more about Ellen White and the Jewish Christian converts.

As I have said many times before, if you really want to experience to Word of God in a more clear manner, try this. Some of you use "bible helps" from a diverse group of authors like Spurgeon, Easton, and even Scofield. Why not try this one time. Each morning as you read the Word, try reading one chapter at a time. After each chapter look into Sister White's writings to see what she says about that particular chapter. (You can access her work online here) After doing this for a few days you will find that she never uses words like the others. Words like "maybe", "perhaps", "could be", and "possible" are NEVER found in her explanations of the Scriptures. Reason being is, like a true prophet will always do, she points RIGHT TO THE VERSE in the Scripture that explains the one in question. It's amazing how much you may be missing! So far, everyone I shared this method of study with have 100% of the time closed the "bible helps" from the other "authors" to never peer into again and opened Ellen White's books!

Try it! What have you got to lose?

 For those claiming Ellen White is a False Prophet.

Online you will find many websites claiming Ellen White is a false prophet, a plagiarist, and some even claim she is a witch. When I first heard of her I ran into these websites and the quotes they said were from her seemed very convincing that yes she was evil. Then I ran across the "official" Ellen White website that stores her writings and I soon started to realize something rather strange. She appeared well versed in Scripture with an uncanny ability to define prophetic symbolism as well as doctrine, and I wasn't seeing the strange quotes the anti-Ellen White sites claimed were authentic. I also noticed the "official" site had a search engine built in it. So I decided to go back to those anti-Ellen White websites and found something quite interesting. On those anti-Ellen White websites they had certain quotes from her that appeared to make her come off as false. So, I copied the quotes into the computer's clipboard. (highlight a sentence or two, and hit CTRL C) Then I pasted those quotes (CTRL V) into the search engine box on the offical Ellen White website, and here's what I found...

  • Around 80% of the quotes were not on her website! They simply lied on those anti-Ellen White websites hoping no one will check them out.
  • Around 20% of the quotes were in fact in her writings, however when you read the paragraphs before and after the quote you see she was taken completely out of context by the anti-Ellen White sites to make it appear she was saying something she never said!

With that said... the fact they attack her using such deceptive methods proves one thing. Satan fears her!

Ellen White and the Bible

Lately there has been a movement among some SDA's and some ex-SDA's wherein they claim Sister White's writings actually supersede the Bible. I've seen this happening for quite some time now and I believe it's time it is addressed. Please see the following quotes from her writings that should put an end to this controversy. And by the way, The term "study the bible" comes up 220 times in her writings.

"If you had made God’s word your study, with a desire to reach the Bible standard and attain to Christian perfection, you would not have needed the Testimonies. It is because you have neglected to acquaint yourselves with God’s inspired Book that He has sought to reach you by simple, direct testimonies, calling your attention to the words of inspiration which you had neglected to obey, and urging you to fashion your lives in accordance with itspure and elevated teachings.

The Lord designs to warn you, to reprove, to counsel, through the testimonies given, and to impress your minds withthe importance of the truth of His wordThe written testimonies are not to give new light, but to impress vividly upon the heart the truths of inspiration already revealed. Man’s duty to God and to his fellow man has been distinctly specified in God’s word; yet but few of you are obedient to the light given. Additional truth is not brought out; but God has through the Testimonies simplified the great truths already given and in His own chosen way brought them before the people to awaken and impress the mind with them, that all may be left without excuse." -Testimonies for the Church Volume 2, Page 605

Wrong Use of the “Testimonies”
The first number of the Testimonies ever published contains a warning against the injudicious use of the light which is thus given to God's people. I stated that some had taken an unwise course; when they had talked their faith to unbelievers, and the proof had been asked for, they had read from my writings instead of going to the Bible for proofIt was shown me that this course was inconsistent and would prejudice unbelievers against the truth. The Testimonies can have no weight with those who know nothing of their spirit. They should not be referred to in such cases. {CCh 95.2}

When speaking of her writings she said,

Ellen White Calls Her Writings a Lesser Light.--Little heed is given to the Bible, and the Lord has given a lesser light to lead men and women to the greater light.--The Review and Herald, Jan. 20, 1903. (Quoted in Colporteur Ministry, p. 125.)  {3SM 30.4}

     Tested by the Bible.--The Spirit was not given--nor can it ever be bestowed--to supersede the Bible; for the Scriptures explicitly state that the Word of God is the standard by which all teaching and experience must be tested. . . . Isaiah declares, "To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them" (Isaiah 8:20).--The Great Controversy, Introduction, p. vii.  {3SM 30.5}

The Bible a Light for My Way
"
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. Psalm 119:105.

"Most wondrous book! bright candle of the Lord!
      Star of eternity!
the only light
      By which the bark of man can navigate
      The sea of life, and gain the coast of bliss securely."  {OHC 31.1}

     Why should not this book--this precious treasure--be exalted and esteemed as a valued friend? This is our chart across the stormy sea of life. It is our guide-book, showing us the way to the eternal mansions, and the character we must have to inhabit them. There is no book the perusal of which will so elevate and strengthen the mind as the study of the Bible. Here the intellect will find themes of the most elevated character to call out its powers. There is nothing that will so endow with vigor all our faculties as bringing them in contact with the stupendous truths of revelation. The effort to grasp and measure these great thoughts expands the mind. We may dig down deep into the mine of truth, and gather precious treasures with which to enrich the soul. Here we may learn the true way to live, the safe way to die.  {OHC 31.2}

     A familiar acquaintance with the Scriptures sharpens the discerning powers, and fortifies the soul against the attacks of SatanThe Bible is the sword of the Spirit, which will never fail to vanquish the adversary. It is the only true guide in all matters of faith and practice. The reason why Satan has so great control over the minds and hearts of men is that they have not made the Word of God the man of their counsel, and all their ways have not been tried by the true test. The Bible will show us what course we must pursue to become heirs of glory.  {OHC 31.3}

     As the heart is opened to the entrance of the Word, light from the throne of God will shine into the soul. That Word, cherished in the heart, will yield to the student a treasure of knowledge that is priceless. Its ennobling principles will stamp the character with honesty and truthfulness, temperance and integrity." {OHC 31.4}

"Church members, ask God to give you a burden to open the Scriptures to others and to do missionary work for those who need help. Some will be rescued in one way and some in another, but the work must always be done as the Lord shall lead. . . . Let the publications containing Bible truth be scattered like the leaves of autumn. Lift Him up, the Saviour of souls, lift Him up higher and still higher. . . ."  {HP 323.3}

"Camp Meeting Bible Class Conducted by Women. --Our camp meetings are to be conducted in such a way that they shall be schools for the education of workers. We need to have a better understanding of the division of labor, and educate all how to carry each part of the work successfully. . . . Let short discourses be given, and then let Bible classes be held. Let the speaker be sure to rivet the truth upon minds. Intelligent women, if truly converted, can act a part in this work of holding Bible classes. There is a wide field of service for women as well as for men."--Letter 84, 1910.  {Ev 473.5}

"The urgent necessities that are making themselves felt in this time demand a constant education in the word of God. This is present truth. Throughout the world there should be a reform in Bible study, for it is needed now as never before. As this reform progresses, a mighty work will be wrought; for when God declared that His word should not return unto Him void, He meant all that He said. A knowledge of God and of Jesus Christ "whom He has sent" is the highest education, and it will cover the earth with its wonderful enlightenment as the waters cover the sea.  {6T 131.2}

     Bible study is especially needed in the schools. Students should be rooted and grounded in divine truth. Their attention should be called, not to the assertions of men, but to the word of God. Above all other books, the word of God must be our study, the great textbook, the basis of all education; and our children are to be educated in the truths found therein, irrespective of previous habits and customs. In doing this, teachers and students will find the hidden treasure, the higher education.  {6T 131.3}

     Bible rules are to be the guide of the daily life. The cross of Christ is to be the theme, revealing the lessons we must learn and practice. Christ must be brought into all the studies, that students may drink in the knowledge of God and may represent Him in character. His excellence is to be our study in time as well as in eternity. The word of God, spoken by Christ in the Old and New Testaments, is the bread from heaven; but much that is called science is as dishes of human invention, adulterated food; it is not the true manna.  {6T 132.1}

     In God's word is found wisdom unquestionable, inexhaustible--wisdom that originated, not in the finite, but in the infinite mind. But much of that which God has revealed in His word is dark to men, because the jewels of truth are buried beneath the rubbish of human wisdom and tradition. To many the treasures of the word remain hidden, because they have not been searched for with earnest perseverance until the golden precepts were understood. The word must be searched in order to purify and prepare those who receive it to become members of the royal family, children of the heavenly King.  {6T 132.2}

     The study of God's word should take the place of the study of those books that have led minds into mysticism and away from the truth. Its living principles, woven into our lives, will be our safeguard in trials and temptations; its divine instruction is the only way to success. As the test comes to every soul, there will be apostasies. Some will prove to be traitors, heady, high-minded, and self-sufficient, and will turn away from the truth, making shipwreck of faith. Why? Because they did not live "by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." They did not dig deep and make their foundation sure. When the words of the Lord through His chosen messengers are brought to them, they murmur and think the way is made too strait. In the sixth chapter of John we read of some who were thought to be disciples of Christ, but who, when the plain truth was presented to them, were displeased and walked no more with Him. In like manner these superficial students also will turn away from Christ.  {6T 132.3}

     Everyone who has been converted to God is called upon to grow in capability by using his talents; every branch of the living Vine that does not grow is pruned off and cast away as rubbish. What, then, shall be the character of the education given in our schools? Shall it be according to the wisdom of this world or according to that wisdom that is from above? Will not teachers awake to their responsibility in this matter and see that the word of God has a larger place in the instruction given in our schools?"  {6T 133.1}
