CAYENNE PEPPER TINCTURE:

You can find tinctures online or at your local health food store. If you want to make your on tincture try to purchase peppers with a high Scoville heat index. See chart below. You can find Bhut Jolokia (ghost pepper) powder. Most cayenne pepper powder that you have in your spice cabinet probably has an index of 30,000-50,000. It is recommended to use powder 90,000 or greater.

** When selecting your powder for the recipes below or dried peppers (e.g. Cayenne, Bhut Jolokia Pepper, or Ghost Chile.) It is important to use the highest heat level as possible.

Recipe 1 is from DR. RICHARD SCHULZE’S herbal formulas. Recipe 2 is a modification if you are using solely powered or dry peppers.

Cayenne Pepper Tincture Recipe 1:

1. Use a Quart Glass Mason jar.
2. Fill a 1/4 of the jar with Pepper Powder reference index above and/or dried peppers crushed or blended.
3. Pour 100 Proof – 50% Alcohol (Vodka, brand or Gin) to the peppers mixture to just COVER them.
4. Blend fresh peppers that you can find at your grocery store that has the highest heat index (see chart above), with 100 Proof Alcohol and create an Apple Sauce-Like Consistency.
5. Add the Pepper Sauce mixture to the Mason jar filling it up 3/4 of the way full.
6. Fill the rest of the Mason Jar with the 100 Proof Alcohol.

Note: If you are using 95% Alcohol (190 Proof) for the first recipe you can dilute the alcohol with half Distilled Water.

Cayenne Pepper Tincture Recipe 2:

If you do not have fresh peppers available, you can make your tincture as follows.

1. Use a Quart Glass Mason jar.
2. Fill half way with powdered pepper.
3. Fill 3/4 way with grain alcohol (around 190 proof). You will have to use the highest proof grain alcohol when using only powdered pepper.
4. Shake vigorously to mix the powder and liquid together.
5. Fill to the top with the grain alcohol.
6. Shake again.

Process of Cayenne Pepper Tincture

You can start using your tincture in 15-16 days, but it is better to wait 28-29 days. The tincture will continue to get stronger until about 3 months of curing. After 3 months, it will not become any more potent. Tinctures should last indefinitely. To preserve the potency, it is good practice to store in a cool, dark place.

1. Store in a cool dark place. You can place your tincture in a brown paper bag.

2. Shake it as MANY times as possible. You must shake it at least once a day.

3. Straining when ready to use. Strain this Mixture through an unbleached Coffee Filter or cheesecloth. If you made the tincture using just powdered pepper, it becomes a bit more difficult and time-consuming to filter.

TIP: Use a thick elastic band and secure the cheesecloth around the glass container where you are filtering the tincture. Use a long enough container that the cheesecloth will not be touching the drained liquid. Pour the tincture into the cheesecloth and let it sit and drain for about an hour.

4. Pour the strained tincture liquid into small, colored glass bottles with glass droppers. It is good practice to label your bottles. I have several different size bottles in brown and blue. I had created many concoctions and didn’t label them thinking I would remember because I have different sizes, colors and types of bottles. I end up forgetting over time, now I label EVERYTHING :)

Precautions and Possible Interactions:

You should always consult your Doctor or Naturopathic Physician before starting any complementary or alternative medicine (CAM). If you are currently being treated with any of the following medications, you should not use cayenne preparations without first talking to your health care provider or natural health provider.
